Michael J. Fox Makes Heartbreaking Admission About Life With Parkinson’s Disease

Throughout his career, Michael J. Fox has largely defied expectations, most notably when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 29.

The 64-year-old Back to the Future star has made one heartbreaking admission, but he still exudes the same tenacity and humor that made him famous.

He co-wrote a new memoir, Future Boy, in which he reflects on the movie that changed his life. He also co-starred with Harrison Ford on Apple TV’s Shrinking and has been a steadfast supporter of Parkinson’s research through his Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has raised over $2 billion so far.

He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom earlier this year for his unwavering efforts to increase knowledge of the illness.

Fox’s public life has long been characterized by this optimism and perseverance.

He said to People recently, “I wake up and get the message of what the day is gonna be like, and I try to adjust to it.”

“I keep getting new challenges physically, and I get through it. I roll around in a wheelchair a lot, and it took some getting used to.”

Fox has acknowledged that he no longer walks frequently because of the possibility of suffering a catastrophic accident, more than thirty years after receiving a Parkinson’s diagnosis. Long-lasting harm has been caused by years of doing high-energy stunts on set, such as sliding across vehicle bonnets and somersaulting over co-stars.

He told the Sunday Times, “And that’s [the point] where I break stuff, it’s absolutely incredible the stuff I broke. In a three-year period I broke my elbow, I broke my hand, I got a big infection in my hand and I almost lost my finger.”

He has been forced to slow down due to the physical toll.

He said, “I take it easy now, I don’t walk that much anymore. I can walk but it’s not pretty and it’s a bit dangerous.”

Nevertheless, Fox continues to prioritize his goals over his losses.

“I see other people’s work, and it makes me think that I might be able to find something that’s for me as an actor and as a writer….And as a parent, husband and friend, I have a lot left to do”, the star shared.

What are the symptoms of Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s disease is described by the NHS as a degenerative neurological disorder that impairs coordination and movement. Slowness of movement, muscle stiffness, and tremor (involuntary shaking) are the prominent symptoms. Balance issues, exhaustion, sleep issues, anxiety, depression, and memory or concentration issues are also common.

Dizziness, constipation, swallowing difficulties, and loss of smell are possible additional symptoms. Individual differences exist in the intensity and course of these symptoms, which may appear gradually over several years.
