Many were shocked by the news of their separation. The couple is now in the middle of an ugly court battle.

Legal action has been taken against Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie for their property, Miraval, in the south of France.

The parents-to-be, Knox and Vivienne, acquired the house in 2008, right before they were due.

In addition to being the setting for their wedding in 2014, the property is now owned equally by the couple.

Pitt gave Jolie 10% of his share of the land and winemaking enterprises at the time of their nuptials.

Frank Pollaro, a furniture designer who helped Pitt get started in winemaking, stated, “Miraval was a love letter to his wife and his children, providing a beautiful life for Angelina and the kids and shielding them from the intense pressures of celebrity.”

The dispute over Miraval has escalated along with the couple’s relationship and court fights.

Jolie’s manager recommended a “doomsday clause” when the two of them went into business together, stating that if one of them left, the other would have to buy out their ownership stake.

Both of them disregarded this provision since they believed that time would never arrive.

Jolie filed a counterclaim against Pitt, claiming he had previously stated that the action “wasn’t necessary for two reasonable people.”

Later, Pitt said the two of them made a pact to never sell their Miraval stake without each other’s approval; Jolie refutes this.

Email sent by Angelina Jolie to Brad Pitt on January 21, 2021, which was later made public. She says she’s sending this email “with a heavy heart.”

She tells Pitt that she is selling Miraval because it is “a business that is centered around alcohol.” Possibly an allusion to the now-infamous plane incident in which Pitt, under the influence of alcohol, “choked” one of their children and “struck another in the face” before pouring alcohol on himself, his wife, and their kids.

Jolie reportedly filed for divorce just days after the incident was reported.

Jolie continued her email with, It’s “Even now impossible to write this without crying. Above all, it is the place we brought the twins home to, and where we were married over a plaque in my mother’s memory. A place…where I thought I would grow old…. But it is also the place that marks the beginning of the end of our family.”

Continuing to reference the date of Pitt’s alleged meltdown on the plane, the actress said, “Miraval for me died September 2016,” adding, “and everything I have seen in the years since has sadly confirmed that.”

Pitt promised to pay $54.5 million to Jolie in February 2021 in exchange for her share in Miraval.

However, the divorce processes hampered the commercial arrangement. Jolie’s allegations of Pitt’s domestic abuse, which included the plane incident, were filed to the court in sealed court records.

To secure the sale of the property, Pitt had Jolie to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) barring her from “discussing outside of court any of Pitt’s personal conduct toward her or the family.” Jolie called the request an “unconscionable gag order.”

But Pitt positioned his request as crucial to the sale, saying that he wanted to “ensure the seller doesn’t damage the value of the asset after being paid for it.”

On October 5, 2021, the actress sold Nouvel to Tenute del Mondo, the wine business of the Stoli group headed by Russian billionaire Yuri Shefler, for $67 million. Nouvel held the actress’s stake of Miraval.

Pitt believed this was payback for his victory in the custody battle.

Despite Jolie’s desire for sole custody with visiting rights for Pitt, Judge John Ouderkirk had awarded Pitt joint custody of the children.

According to a source close to Pitt, “It is not a coincidence that she sold her interest in Miraval to an adversarial party, and part of the family home to a stranger, right after a judge granted Brad a huge win: 50-50 custody,” A panel of three judges later withdrew Ouderkirk from the case, and his decision was overturned.

Pitt sued Jolie, her holding firm, and the new owners of Miraval in February 2022. Jolie, he claimed, “contributed nothing to Miraval’s success.” Stoli counterclaimed “for the illegal and malicious actions of Pitt and his allies to injure Nouvel by devaluing its investments and depriving it of its proper role in the management of Chateau Miraval, the world-famous producer of rosé wine.”

Pitt sought to have Jolie’s sale of Nouvel nullified by filing an updated complaint on June 1, 2023. Jolie’s legal team responded by issuing a statement in which they claimed Pitt “has never publicly denied”

Pitt’s attorney Anne Kiley responded, “Brad has owned everything he’s responsible for from day one, but he’s not going to own anything he didn’t do.”

A source close to the family lamented, “I hope you’ll give some grace to somebody who had a breakdown.” Adding, “Everybody was shocked by the eruption on the plane, because Brad is not an abusive person. But even more devastating was what came afterwards: Brad being alienated from those he loves most—his children.”
