Wildlife Photographer Captures Alligator With No Bite – Internet Baffled How It’s Still Alive

French wildlife photographer, jawless alligator: Lucas, who is well-known for following reptiles all across the world, recently shared stunning images and video of an alligator that had lost its complete upper jaw.

Alligator, a French wildlife photographer: Stories of tenacity from nature astonish us every day.

The wild American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) was recently sighted gliding over the waters of Florida’s Everglades by French wildlife photographer Lucas Cottereau, who is well-known for following reptiles all over the world. The reptile’s complete lack of an upper jaw was what made the sight remarkable.

Lucas shared stunning images and videos of the alligator. Despite the serious injuries, the gator can be seen moving peacefully both on land and in the water. Instagram users were perplexed by the sight, which showed only its bottom jaw intact with all of its teeth in alignment. Many doubts were generated by the fact that its upper snout was missing.

In his caption, Lucas wrote: “Observed this American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) in the Everglades, March 2025. Its upper jaw was missing, leaving only exposed tissue and a partial snout. No signs of captivity – it was active and free-ranging. No idea how it’s managing to survive like this.”

The post went viral and Instagram users took over the comments section to share their views and ask their queries. A user said, “How does it eat? Poor thing.”

Another user commented, “Yall asking how does he eat im wondering how did this happen.” A third person wrote, “At least it can’t bite you. It’s cute.”

It turns out, though, that there are several known instances of jawless alligators. Another alligator, “Jawlean,” who resides in Orlando’s Gatorland, was spotted by an Instagram user. This one lacks an upper jaw as well. Jawlean was saved and is currently in care, in contrast to the recent wild one that Lucas saw. The park’s director claims that although jaw injuries of this kind are common, Jawlean’s is special because of how clean the wound is, most likely from a boat propeller.
