Career, Net Worth, and Gigagantic Divorce Settlement Of Richard Gere, One Of The Most Handsome Man In Hollywood
Nobody on the earth is unaware of Richard Gere’s fame. He was named one of Hollywood’s hottest performers for his performance in the classic American Gigolo, and even at 72 years old, the renowned actor still exudes the same charisma that first made him a star.
Gere knew he wanted to be involved in music or theater ever since he was a student.
“I went through a young-man-paranoid stage,” Gere said of the time he dropped college in order to pursue a career in acting. “I was dead middle class, and I felt I had to do something special. I didn’t want what I thought was that amorphous middle-class nowhere status. Even though my parents questioned what I was doing, they were loving, sweet and supportive.”
The young, gifted Gere was able to enter Hollywood after landing the part of a male escort from L.A. named Julian Kaye. John Travolta was first offered the part, but Gere declined it because he didn’t realize the sequences would be that sexual. ”It was just in the natural process of making the movie. I certainly felt vulnerable, but I think it’s different for men than women,” he later told Advocate.
Following American Gigolo came landmark films that permanently altered Gere’s career, including Pretty Woman (1990), one of the most romantic films ever made, and An Officer and a Gentleman (1982). In the latter, Gere, who was 41 at the time, portrayed affluent businessman Edward Lewis, who develops feelings for Julia Roberts’ character, a prostitute on Sunset Boulevard.
Roberts was a budding star, and Gere was already well-known at the time, but they both performed brilliantly in their parts and went on to become one of the most well-known on-screen couples.
Speaking of this movie, which was a huge breakthrough for her, Roberts told Entertainment Weekly Radio of Gere who turned down the part several times, ”I just said ‘you have to do this movie, if you don’t do this movie and it falls apart and I lose this job it would just be terrible’. And I kinda pleaded with him in a very real way. And all three of us went out to dinner and um, I had a great time and he changed all our lives forever by agreeing to do this movie.”
“It was a charming movie. Julia hadn’t done much at all at that point. There weren’t high expectations for this thing,” Gere said.
The number of hit movies Gere was part of only grew bigger and bigger during the 90’s and everyone was looking forward to seeing the sex symbol in new projects.
For his performance as “Billy Flynn” in the successful musical Chicago, which grossed $306 million and held the record until 2008, Gere was awarded a Golden Globe in 2002.
Despite the fact that the films he chooses to star in are never about money, Gere has amassed millions of dollars throughout the years. He reportedly makes between $5 and $10 million for each of his movies. Celebrity Net Worth estimates the actor’s net worth at $120 million.
In terms of property, Gere proudly owned Strongheart Manor, a Hamptons mansion, for eight years before selling it to TV host Matt Lauer for $36.5 million. Gere still owns a number of properties in New York, including the Bedford Post Inn, which he co-owns with buddy Russell Hernandez, and a spectacular 50+ acre complex estate close to Pound Ridge.
Being voted People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive in 1999, it doesn’t come as a surprise that handsome Gere dated many beautiful woman.
He wed model Cindy Crawford in a private ceremony in 1991. They were married for just four years, and she was seventeen years his junior. Then, in 2002, Gere wed Carey Lowell, an actress and model. Together, they had a son named Homer James Jigme Gere, who shares his well-known father’s good looks. However, the couple filed for divorce in 2013 after a protracted and emotionally and financially taxing split. They never formally made their settlement information public.
Gere is currently wed to 37-year-old Alejandra Silva, with whom he has two sons. He is the most modest, kind, considerate, loving, caring, humorous, and giving man I have ever met. How do I put it?
