Student Wins $25,000 Settlement Over “Donald Trump Controversial Shirt”

A high school student in Oregon was punished by the school for wearing a T-shirt that supported President Trump’s border wall.

On Tuesday, his lawyers said that the student had settled his case against the school district for $25,000.

As part of the settlement, the Hillsboro School District, which is in a suburb west of Portland, had to pay Addison Barnes $25,000 in legal fees.

Also, Liberty High School’s principal, Greg Timmons, had to write Barnes an apology.

“I brought this case to stand up for myself and other students who might be afraid to express their right-of-center views,” Barnes said in a post.

A complaint filed May 18 in U.S. District Court says Barnes, who is a senior and 18 years old, wore the “Donald J. Trump Border Wall Construction Co.” shirt to school on January 19 before a planned discussion about immigration problems in his “People and Politics” class.

At least one teacher and one student told Barnes that his T-shirt, which said “The wall just got 10 feet higher,” made them feel bad, so he took it off.

Barnes was then told to take off the shirt or leave the school.

He made the decision to leave, which was recorded as a punishment. The school board says that the suspension was later lifted.
