After More Than 50 Years, Elton John’s Final 5-Word Announcement Is Breaking Hearts
You probably already know that Elton John is retiring from touring after a long and successful career, unless you’ve been hiding under a very thick rock.
After starting his farewell tour “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” in 2018, the Rocket Man finally brought it to a dramatic conclusion this past Saturday.
According to his official website, John’s last concert occurred on July 8 at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. However, the iconic musician has since hinted that we may see him again in the future.
CNN reports that the “Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour” was supposed to wrap up in 2021 but that the COVID-19 outbreak has forced organizers to change their minds.
Instead, this past Saturday marked the end of John’s touring career, which spanned the better part of the last half century.
There were more than 300 performances on this tour. John’s website claims that over 6 million people from all over the world tuned in to watch the shows.
John explained to Anderson Cooper of CNN in 2018 that he wanted to spend more time with his family (wife David Furnish and their two sons) as the primary motivation for ending his touring career.
“We had children and had changed our lives and in 2015, we sat down with their school schedule and we said I’m going to miss too much of this,” the Your Song star told Cooper.
The weekend of John’s last concert tour was an emotional one, as it marked the end of a chapter in one of the most successful musical careers in history.
A clip from Elton’s chat with Cooper was featured in an Instagram video he shared on Saturday, just before his gig in Stockholm. John captioned the photo:
“What a journey this tour has been and now we find ourselves at the end of it. Tonight is the final night.”
Elton promised his Stockholm audience that they will always be in his “head, heart, and soul” once the concert came to a close.
He also reaffirmed that he will “never be touring again,” though he did leave open the possibility of doing a “one-off thing” in the future.
