There was a swarm of cruel remarks directed at Alicia McCarvell because of the perceived disparity between her and her husband’s physical appearance.
“It’s because, by beauty standards, we don’t make sense.” – she said
A video of her and her spouse partaking in several recent TikTok fads was uploaded on the internet. And yet, despite doing the identical thing as every other couple, theirs received significantly more coverage. And that was all due to their appearance.
Alicia’s weight problem is not exactly a secret. In contrast, her husband is a gym rat with a great beard.
He looks like he was taken straight from the pages of Men’s Health and is blissfully married to Alicia.
Some folks just won’t accept that they are a happy married pair. Because human beings are so terrible.
Some people benefit from beauty standards, while everyone else pays the price. It’s as though there’s no way out of it. It’s natural to identify with a certain stereotype or set of tastes, but you shouldn’t let it define you.
People appear to be as superficial everywhere you go. As appearances are everything to them, Alicia decided to silence them.
“And since we don’t add up, people try to add things to my side of the equation to make it make sense – by saying things like “Oh, she must not have been fat when they met” or “Oh she’s gotta be rich.”
A man like Scott not sharing that outlook is unimaginable to them.
Even more outrageously, one lady actually believed she could persuade Scott to dump Alicia in favor of her. What gall some people have!
“A woman slid into Scott’s DMs and said “You should be with somebody who looks like me. She was thin and, by beauty standards, a 10 out of 10.”
Yet when time (or excess weight) robs you of your youthful beautiful looks, you’re left with nothing but a sleazy disposition. One thing Alicia hammered home to them was how important this was.
You won’t get very far in life if your physical attractiveness is your only selling point.
Especially if your looks change.
“And on the scale of what my husband values, how well my body fits into the body standards is not on the top of his list. He values my humor and my commitment and my love and my caring heart. And none of these things that he values about me change if my body changes.”
Many people’s lives have been wrecked by the excessive value we place on physical appearance.
Now we see people suffering from depression because they perceive they do not meet these criteria. Also, we’ve been taught to make fun of those who don’t fit the stereotype.
To everyone’s benefit, we need to stop acting like children.
We can’t expect to keep our youthful appearance forever, therefore perhaps there are other things of greater worth to focus on.
Alicia stated it openly as well.
“And I get it if this is the way you think, it’s the way you’ve been taught. However, it is your responsibility to unlearn it.”
I’m praying that her words reached her intended audience, and that you, too, were able to take something away from it.
