Tourist Says U.S. Border Officials Detained Him Over JD Vance Meme On Phone
According to a traveler, he was turned away from the United States for a fairly peculiar reason.
Officers have long argued that anybody who wants to enter the United States runs the possibility of having their phone inspected by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The CBP website states: “CBP’s ability to lawfully inspect electronic devices crossing the border is integral to keeping America safe in an increasingly digital world.”
“All travelers crossing the United States border are subject to CBP inspection. On rare occasions, CBP officers may search a traveler’s mobile phone, computer, camera, or other electronic devices during the inspection process.”

Although they claim that device checks are “rare,” some people think that officers have been using this authority more recently, to the point where people are being advised to turn off their iPhone’s facial ID or to switch off their phone entirely before leaving.
This is because it has been alleged that CBP officials can unlock your cellphone “without violating the Constitution” by utilising your likeness.
Mads Mikkelsen, 21, is one individual who says they recently had their phone tested (no, not the Casino Royale actor).
Mads claims that police denied him admission into the US after finding a meme of Vice President JD Vance with an egg-shaped head and no hair on his phone.
The original meme was developed in October 2024 by X user @DaveMcNamee3000, who promised to “turn JD Vance into a progressively apple cheeked baby” for each 100 likes.
‘Abuse of Power and Harassment’ is what Mads claims happened, according to Mail Online.
“They asked questions about drug trafficking, terrorist plots and right-wing extremism totally without reason,” he continued to tell Nordlys.
Additionally, Mads said that he was threatened “with a minimum fine of $5,000 or five years in prison if I refused to provide the password to my phone.”
He was reportedly placed in a cell and denied access to the airport.
Since Mads’ claims surfaced, US officials have refuted the claim that the strange Vance meme prevented him from entering the US.
Sharing a screengrab of a Mail Online article on the matter, CBP tweeted: “Fact Check: FALSE. Mads Mikkelsen was not denied entry for any memes or political reasons, it was for his admitted drug use.”
The Department of Homeland Security has also refuted Mads’ claims. It wrote on Facebook: “FACT CHECK. Claims that Mads Mikkelsen was denied entry because of a meme are unequivocally FALSE.”
It added: “Mikkelson was refused entry into the U.S. for his admitted drug use. Only those who respect our laws and follow the rules will be welcomed into our country.”
