On A Snowy Christmas Eve, I Found An Elderly Woman By The Side Of The Road And Took Her Home. A Few Days Later, A Luxuriously Decorated SUV Pulled Up To My Door

Even though I was a struggling single mother, I had to assist the elderly woman I discovered on Christmas Eve. I never thought that my small deed of kindness would mend my wounded heart or bring a strange luxury SUV to my home.

I trudged home through the deepest snow I had seen in years, pulling my old coat tighter about me. After cleaning floors in the Grayson mansion, I was exhausted, but I was almost at home.

I couldn’t complain, though. Although I had a difficult job, the Graysons were considerate to wealthy people. In addition, I had five ravenous mouths at home.

The pure snow was covered in long shadows from the lamps, and I couldn’t help but think about Jason, my late husband. He most likely would have taken the kids out for an unplanned snowball war and would have loved this type of evening.

Oh, how I missed him. Three years suddenly seemed like yesterday and forever.

The woman hunched on a seat, shivering in the dark, was nearly invisible to me.

My initial reaction was to rush by. The roof had begun to leak again last week, and we hardly had enough for ourselves. But I stopped for a reason.

“Ma’am?” I stepped tentatively closer and shouted out. “Are you alright?”

My heart tightened as she raised her head. She had clear blue eyes that reminded me of my grandmother’s and a worn yet lovely face. The cold made her lips quiver as she tried to smile.

She answered, “Oh, I’m fine, dear,” in a faint but refined voice. “Just resting a moment.”

I looked at my timepiece. It was Christmas Eve at 8 p.m. Unless there’s a problem, nobody “rests” on a bench in this weather at this hour.

“Do you have somewhere to go?” I knew the answer when I asked.

Her face was one of desperation and pride as she paused. “I’ll manage.”

The voice of Jason in my mind said, Katie-girl, nobody should be left alone on Christmas Eve.

I sighed, unable to leave even though I knew I was probably insane.

“Look, I have a warm house and some soup on the stove, but that’s about all I have. Why don’t we go home together?”

“Oh, I couldn’t possibly—”

I responded, “I insist,” and held out my hand. “I’m Kate, by the way.”

After a lengthy pause, she took my hand and said, “Margaret,” quietly. “You’re very kind.”

It was a slow trek home, but Margaret steadied herself with each stride. The lights were on as we got closer to my tiny house, and I recognized Emma standing at the window, waiting for me.

“Mom!” Before we even got to the door, my youngest, Tommy, threw it open. When he saw Margaret, his eyes widened. “Who’s that?”

I said, “This is Margaret,” as I assisted her up the squeaky stairs. “She’s going to stay with us tonight.”

In the doorway came my other children, Lisa, Emma, Michael, and Sarah. They gazed at Margaret with unabashed interest.

After calling out, “Kids, help Margaret get settled while I warm up some soup,” I went to the kitchen.

To my astonishment, they immediately got to work. Michael brought out a chair while Sarah got our nicest blanket, which wasn’t saying much.

With paper ornaments they had created at school, Emma and Lisa began displaying our small Christmas tree to Margaret.

“Look at the angel!” Lisa cried out. “I made it myself!”

Margaret remarked, “It’s beautiful,” in a warm voice. “Did you make all these decorations?”

I poured soup onto our mismatched dishes while the children chattered away. It was a run-down house, but at least it was warm. Warm, mainly. To stop the drafts, I had placed old towels underneath the doors.

Margaret and I sat at the kitchen table with cups of tea later, after the children had gone to bed.

She said, “Thank you,” in a whisper. “I never expected…”

Simply put, “No one should be alone on Christmas,” I stated.

During our break the following morning, I managed to catch my boss, Dennis, in the kitchen. As usual, her gray hair was tied back nicely as she arranged flowers in a crystal vase.

“Denise, can I talk to you about something?” I fidgeted with the strings of my apron.

Her lovely brown eyes wrinkled at the corners as she turned. “Sure, honey. What is causing you distress?”

“Well, last night I took someone in. An old lady who was left out in the cold.”

Denise put her flowers down. “On the eve of Christmas?” “Oh, Kate.”

“I know it sounds crazy—”

“Not insane.” “Be kind.” She gave my arm a squeeze. “God knows that the world needs more of that. How do the children feel about it?”

“They have already essentially adopted her. However…” I paused. “With money being so tight…”

“Don’t you worry about that.” Denise gave me a hand pat. “I have some ham left over from our Christmas meal. So you can bring it home to those babies; I’ll stop by home during my break to get it.”

“Oh, no, I couldn’t—”

“You absolutely could and will.” Her stern gaze remained riveted on me. “That’s what community is for.”

“Excuse me, you did what, Kate?” Janine’s piercing voice interrupted.

She folded her arms and leaned against the doorframe. “Honey, you’re already struggling to provide for the children on your soccer team.” “What were you thinking?”

Her remarks hurt because they confirmed my suspicions.

“Shame on you, Janine!” Denise interrupted. “All acts of kindness make the world a better place and…” Denise gave me a wink. “Life has a way of repaying people who go out of their way to help others.”

I nearly rolled my eyes the way Janine did. I had no idea at the time how my small deed of compassion would transform my life.

Three days later, as I was heading out for work, a stylish SUV decked out in Christmas decorations came up outside my house. As I continued to stare at it in disbelief and bewilderment, a tall man wearing a pricey suit burst out, his face tense with emotion.

He yelled, “Are you Kate?”

He frowned fiercely, and I nodded, suppressing my instant nervousness.

“My name is Robert. My mother is Margaret. His tone grew softer.” “I’ve been searching for her since Christmas Eve.”

He was obviously upset as he ran a hand through his dark hair while I stood motionless on my front steps. “Please, I need to know if she’s alright.”

“She’s fine,” I told him happily. She’s probably working on puzzles with my youngest while they’re indoors. They’ve developed into a formidable team.

His expression was filled with relief, then agony.

“I never ought to have abandoned her and Claire. What was I thinking, God?” In the snow, he paced. “My sister Claire was meant to take care of Mom while I was away on business. However, after I returned…”

His voice broke. “I discovered that Claire was hosting a party at Mom’s house.” The place was in ruins, and Claire simply shrugged and stated that Mom had “moved out” when I asked where she was. left her own fucking home! Yes, exactly. She was obviously expelled by my leech of a sister.

“That’s terrible,” I said to myself.

“I’ve been looking all over. At last, I went to seek Mr. Grayson, a friend of my father’s, for assistance. We were overheard by one of his employees, who brought you up. He gave me a serious look. “You saved her life, you know.”

I shook my head. “Anyone would have—”

However, they didn’t. You did. He produced a pair of keys and pointed to the adorned vehicle. “This SUV… it’s yours now.”

“What? No way in hell could I—”

“Please.” I saw that his eyes were a warm hazel as he took a step closer. “You halted when everyone else passed. Allow me to pay you back.”

Taking my hands, he slipped the keys into my palm with gentle care. Despite my reservations, I wrapped my fingers around the keys and pondered Denise’s statement that good deeds are rewarded.

I was mistaken to believe it was the last time I would see Robert and Margaret.

Robert settled into our lives throughout the course of the following few weeks. He would constantly stay to talk as he brought workers to fix different parts of the house.

He kept on helping even though I tried to stop him. As I became closer to him and saw how much he loved family, I came to accept it. He was very appreciative of us and didn’t view us as a charity case, as I initially believed.

“Mom!” One evening, Sarah called. “Mr. Robert brought pizza!”

“And books!” Lisa enthusiastically added.

He was looking a little embarrassed when I spotted him in our just-fixed kitchen. “I hope it’s okay with you. The children said they were learning about ancient Egypt.”

“You didn’t have to—”

“I wanted to.” He grinned softly. “Besides, Tommy promised to teach me his secret handshake.”

As winter gave way to spring, I found myself watching the clock on the days I knew he would be arriving. After the children went to bed, we would sit on the porch and discuss everything: his job, my hopes for the children, and our common experiences of hope and sorrow.

I once stated, “Jason would have loved this,” pointing to our renovated house. “He always had such plans.”

Robert was silent for a while. “Tell me about him.”

I did, and to my astonishment, I was able to discuss Jason without experiencing that searing ache in my chest. I felt heard because Robert listened to me.

Weeks turned into months. The children flourished under the care of their new grandmother figure and Robert’s constant presence, and Margaret also paid frequent visits.

Sarah once said, “He likes you, you know,” with wisdom beyond her thirteen years.

“Sarah—”

“It’s acceptable to feel joy once more, Mom. That’s what Dad would want.

Robert and I were married a year later. I marveled at how life surprises you as I stood in the living room watching Margaret and the girls bake cookies and Robert assist Tommy in hanging ornaments on our new Christmas tree.

After saying, “Perfect spot, buddy,” he turned to face me. “What do you think, Kate?”

My response, “It’s beautiful,” encompassed much more than simply the tree.
