“Speak Now Or Forever, Hold Your Peace” – What Happens If Someone Objects At Your Wedding?

“Speak Now Or Forever, Hold Your Peace” – What Happens If Someone Objects At Your Wedding?

“Speak now or forever, hold your peace” frequently evokes memories of abrupt disruptions during wedding ceremonies.

Usually, our minds conjure up images of an enraged ex interrupting the ceremony. But this phrase’s original purpose was more utilitarian.

It was the last chance to make sure there were no moral or legal obstacles before the marriage was consummated.

My stepbrother and I were both at the wedding party for my dad’s third wedding. He was just six years old, and I was ten.

The preacher posed the customary question as the ceremony went on: if anyone had any objections to the marriage, they ought to speak them right away. My stepbrother surprised everyone by eloquently raising his hand.

My dad asked him about why he was objecting, appearing a little startled. My stepbrother responded, “Because I want you to promise to take me fishing whenever I want, first.”

The people at the wedding started laughing, and my dad smiled and told him they would go fishing as much as he wanted.

This expression was originally meant to preserve the sanctity of marriage by allowing any unspoken concerns to be discussed before the exchanging of vows, even if it now frequently sets the setting for dramatic or hilarious situations.

In this instance, it resulted in a humorous and endearing scene that turned into a treasured family tale.
