Sean Penn’s Blunt Response To Madonna Calling Him ‘Love Of Her Life’ Has Fans Stunned
After their four-year marriage ended, Sean Penn responded to his ex-wife Madonna’s assertion that he was “the love of life.”
The 64-year-old actor was questioned about the pop star’s assertion, which she made in her 1991 documentary Truth or Dare, while appearing on Louis Theroux’s podcast.
After meeting on the set of Madonna’s music video for her smash song, Material Girl, the ex-couple were wed from 1985 to 1989.
Madge, 66, maintained that Sean was still the love of her life a few years after they split up, but it seemed that Sean didn’t share her sentiments.
Addressing her remark, he brutally responded: “It didn’t take us long to realise that we had mistaken a good first date for a wedding partner.”

During the conversation, Louis asked: “Did you see the documentary they made about her?”
Sean replied: “Oh, yeah I know about that. Yep”, while Louis asked: “And then they ask her ‘who’s the love of your life?’ Do you, do you remember that?”
When asked if he remembered, Sean added, “I do. I remember what she said. She’s very sweet. Look, she’s been a good friend for a lot of years. It didn’t take us long to realise that we had mistaken a good first date for a wedding partner.”
“It didn’t take us long to recover after we got divorced, maybe a year, in a friendship. I have a lot of fond memories of it – it’s not all jail. But there was a lot of alcohol and she’d be fairly accusing me of that.”
Sean’s followers said that they were taken aback by the actor’s “rough” appearance after his podcast participation.
The star of Mystic River made a number of shocking statements, most notably that he didn’t believe that director Woody Allen had molested his daughter Dylan Farrow in 1992.
But what really had viewers talking in the comments was his weathered appearance and a huge red bruise on his nose.
He had a beard and unkempt grey hair, and he looked exhausted, with bags under his eyes.
“He looks rough,” one person wrote underneath a clip from the interview shared on X, while another surprised commentator asked, “He’s only 64?!?”
“I’m his age. My 95 year old father looks younger than him,” someone else added.
“2 years younger than me and looks a decade older! Dang, he aged like a worn leather handbag.” “He looks okay for a man in his 80s.” “Is he 90?”
“That’s a hard 64”; “Jeez, he looks rough! What happened to him, he’s aged 30 years.”
Madonna and Sean got married in 1985, beginning a turbulent marriage in which she filed for divorce in 1987, got back together with him, and finally permanently left him in 1989.
‘She’s someone I love,’ Sean insisted in June 2024, refuting the outrageous rumour that he had physically harmed his ex-wife Madonna.
Sensational allegations that he once chained her to a chair and hit her with a baseball bat surfaced during their tumultuous 1980s marriage.
Madonna and Sean have both vehemently denied that he ever used violence against her, and she even provided testimony in a defamation case against him on the claims.
Sean clarified the matter once more at the time, acknowledging that a SWAT team had visited their house as a result of one of their marital arguments.
According to the New York Times, after Madonna allegedly called the police to express her concerns about weaponry in the house, SWAT stormed onto the property, smashed the windows, and placed Sean “in handcuffs.”
“I had a freaking SWAT team come into my house,” Sean recalled in a new interview with the newspaper’s longtime columnist Maureen Dowd.
I said: “I’m not coming out. I’m going to finish my breakfast.” The next thing I knew, windows were being broken all around the house and they came in,’ he said.
Eventually he got wind of the rumors that he had “trussed her up like a turkey,” he said. “I didn’t know what “trussed up” meant, first.”
When he went out for a smoke the following morning after having a “lovely night” with a subsequent girlfriend, he discovered that she was “looking at me like I killed her dog” and that he was being asked “about this hitting Madonna in the head with a baseball bat.”
Sean said, “I didn’t know what the hell she was talking about. Now I think it’s fair to say that I’m not the biggest guy in the world. But if I hit Mike Tyson in the head with a baseball bat, he’s going to the hospital.”
He and Madonna now enjoy an amicable rapport, partly because, he said, “It turns out it’s a lot quicker to repair a friendship after divorce if there are not kids involved.”
Madonna defended Sean’s $10 million defamation case against Empire creator Lee Daniels in 2015 by testifying that he never mistreated her.
Empire star Terrance Howard’s admission in an interview that he had hit his wife in front of their kids sparked the argument.
Because he had never done what ‘Marlon Brando or Sean Penn’ did, Lee jumped to Terrance’s defence throughout the ensuing hot dispute.
Madonna provided a declaration on Sean’s behalf, specifically refuting the claims regarding the baseball bat and being restrained, after he sued Lee for the comment.
“While we certainly had more than one heated argument during our marriage, Sean has never struck me, “tied me up” or physically assaulted me, and any report to the contrary is completely outrageous, malicious, reckless and false,” she asserted.
As a result of the lawsuit’s eventual settlement, Lee was compelled to publicly apologise for his first remarks and donate to Sean’s disaster relief group CORE.
