‘Relationship Expert’ Advises Parents To Get Baby’s Consent Before Changing A Nappy

For babies to learn the value of consent from birth on, a s**uality expert says parents should ask them if it’s okay to change their diapers.

This is what Deanne Carson, who on Twitter calls herself a “s**uality educator, speaker, and author,” said on ABC (see video below). She said that she works with kids as young as three years old on consent issues, but parents should start talking about them much younger.

Deanne agreed that babies can’t answer, but she said it’s important to make eye contact with them to show them that what they say matters. In a show about consent rules, she said, “We work with children from three years old. We work from parents from birth.”

The reporter looks lost and asks, “”from birth?” “Yes, just about how to set up a culture of consent in their homes so ‘I’m going to change your nappy now, is that OK,’ Deanne responded. “Of course a baby is not going to respond ‘yes mum that’s awesome, I’d love to have my nappy changed’.

“But if you leave a space, and wait for body language and wait to make eye contact then you’re letting that child know that their response matters.” A lot of people who saw her idea seemed confused. On Twitter, people said things like “I’m not hearing this right surely” and “I’m dumbfounded.” Someone wrote: “If this doesn’t qualify for Lefty Lunacy…”
