Queen Camilla Honors Queen Elizabeth In A Graceful Black Veil During Historic Vatican Visit

Queen Camilla’s somber visit to the Vatican took a dramatic turn when her arresting appearance captured the public’s attention and sparked intense discussion.

On October 23, 2025, King Charles III and Queen Camilla went to the Sistine Chapel to attend a momentous liturgy with Pope Leo XIV. Even though the event was extremely important, Camilla’s attire—specifically, the headpiece she wore—was the main topic of online discussion.

Queen Camilla Dresses by the Book

Being the first British king to openly pray with a pope since Henry VIII’s break with Rome in 1534, Charles made history. Many people consider this occasion to be a symbolic step toward rapprochement between the Anglican and Catholic churches.

The king looked elegant yet simple for the event by dressing in a blue suit, white shirt, black tie, and a pocket square with stripes in blue and white.

Women are expected to wear a modest black dress with sleeves and a black mantilla, which is a shawl or veil made of silk or lace that is worn over the head, as part of protocol for papal audiences.

When Camilla arrived in the State Bentley at the San Damaso courtyard for her and Charles’ historic audience with Pope Leo, she dressed traditionally in a black outfit designed by Fiona Clare.

The 78-year-old accessorized it with a Philip Treacy-designed black mantilla. Her attire was obviously influenced by what the late monarch wore when she met with the pope.

Why Queen Camilla Was Dressed in Mourning Black

Camilla is not allowed to wear white when she meets with the pope, although other queens are occasionally spotted wearing it. Il privilegio del bianco, or “the privilege of the white,” is a long-standing Vatican custom that informs the color selection.

Only Catholic queens and princesses are allowed to wear white at papal audiences, according to this little-known custom.

Princess Charlene of Monaco, Queen Letizia of Spain, Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, Princess Marina of Naples, former Queen Sofia of Spain, and former Queen Paola of Belgium are all members of this select group.

Queen Camilla followed etiquette by dressing all in black, from her dress and stockings to her shoes and the eye-catching headgear that resembled a veil, as she is not one of the people who is given this privilege.

A Priceless Tribute to the Late Queen

A Georgian cross-shaped raspberry pip brooch adorned with translucent topaz and diamonds was Camilla’s accessorizing piece.

The brooch, which is said to be worth about $53,000, had special significance because it was originally owned by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Maxwell Stone, a jeweler in the United Kingdom, claims that the item is “a deeply sentimental piece from the royal vault” and “is believed to have been one of the late monarch’s favorites.”

Camilla frequently dons the piece as a sincere homage to her mother-in-law’s life of devotion, even though the late queen never wore it in public. In addition to wearing it during her first church service at Sandringham earlier this January, she first wore it for Christmas 2023.

‘She Has a Vulture on Her Head’ – Online Reactions Turn Savage

Camilla’s headpiece drew the most attention online. Fans were quick to share their astonishment and criticism. One person wondered, “Why is she wearing that on her head?” while another remarked, “That headpiece is ridiculous…simple [sic] veil would be enough.”

Some netizens couldn’t hide their amusement, with one joking, “What is that atrocious headpiece.. is she celebrating halloween with the pope [sic],” and another penning, “Whatever that head piece is, it’s giving horns!! Lol [sic].”

Others painted a more vivid picture, with a user saying, “Camilla looks like she has a vulture on her head… 🫠,” while someone else mused, “Is she trying to make a veil look like a crown of thorns? A simple veil would have left the attention on the moment and not the atrocity on her head. Bless her heart!”

More people felt the look was inappropriate for the occasion, as one noted, “The Queen’s headpiece is not eligible for the official visit to the Vatican 🙄.” Another simply questioned her outfit choice, “Why is Camilla wearing black?”

A Visit Centuries in the Making

The Vatican claims that the visit of Camilla and King Charles was a first for Anglican-Catholic relations and had not happened in 500 years. Care for the environment and Christian unity were its two main themes.

In a service that combined Catholic and Anglican customs, Charles and Camilla joined Pope Leo under Michelangelo’s well-known ceiling frescoes in the Sistine Chapel.

After the English translation of the Lord’s Prayer, the Sistine Chapel Choir sang hymns. Members of two royal choirs, the children’s choir of the Chapel Royal of St. James’s Palace and the St George’s Chapel Choir from Windsor Castle, joined them.

But ultimately, it was an eye-catching veil, a contentious headpiece, and a flurry of online outcry that demonstrated once more that the royal family will always be judged by the public, not the hymns or the prayers.
