Princess Diana’s Sister ‘Seriously Injured’ After Horrific Accident
Lady Sarah McCorquodale, the elder sister of Princess Diana, aged 70, has been admitted to the hospital following severe injuries sustained in a horseback riding accident.
Challenging recovery
The tragedy, which allegedly occurred “within the past month,” was verified by her brother, Earl Spencer, during an episode of the podcast Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth.
“Sarah, who is almost a decade older than me and has always had a knack for getting into trouble, had a really bad fall last month and has been in hospital for some time,” he said.
Earl Spencer characterized her recuperation as arduous, indicating that medical personnel have deemed Lady Sarah a “demanding patient” throughout her treatment. He narrated how the chief physician addressed his brother-in-law, Neil McCorquodale, with what he saw as diplomatic language:
“The lead doctor said to my brother-in-law, ‘She’s quite a character, isn’t she?’, which I think is code for, ‘Could you take her home?’”

Dated King Charles
Notwithstanding the accident, Lady Sarah’s perseverance has consistently defined her character. Renowned for her intimate association with the royal family, she briefly dated the then-Prince Charles and subsequently introduced him to her younger sister, Diana – a relationship that would culminate in one of the most notable royal marriages of the 20th century.
Lady Sarah, as the maternal aunt of Prince William and Prince Harry, has preserved robust familial connections over the years. She has maintained ties to aristocratic circles through her marriage to landowner Neil McCorquodale, while enjoying a very secluded life in contrast to her late sister’s international renown.
Earl Spencer articulated the persistent difficulties of managing public intrigue surrounding Diana’s legacy, conveying unease regarding strangers who approach him to give their recollections of the moment they learnt of her demise.
“I tell you what I do find quite difficult, it probably sounds ungracious, but occasionally total strangers come up and feel they must tell me where they were when they heard she died. I’m sure that’s helpful to them, it’s not entirely helpful to everyone else.”
“I was very anti-it”
He described a recent encounter with an American woman who “clutched me to her ample bosom and said that I may have thought I grew up with Diana, but actually she did in South Dakota.”
Lady Sarah’s accident occurs as the Spencer family contemplates Diana’s life and legacy. Earl Spencer commemorates each anniversary of his sister’s demise by visiting her gravesite at Althorp estate with his children, collecting flowers for her tomb.
He also rehashed previous concerns over Diana’s funeral, specifically the decision mandating Princes William and Harry, aged 15 and 12 at the time, to walk behind their mother’s coffin. Earl Spencer reminisced:
“I was very anti-it. I thought it was terrible. It wasn’t [Prince Philip’s] decision to do it. But, actually, on the day, he was a calming presence.”
In his biography Spare, Prince Harry later said that his uncle denounced the arrangement at the time as a “barbarity” and rejected a plan for William to walk alone.
Notwithstanding familial and societal constraints, Lady Sarah has persisted as a formidable and resolute figure. Renowned for her adventurous attitude, she persists in riding horses even in her 70s – a hobby that has regrettably resulted in her latest hospitalization.
We extend our thoughts and prayers to Lady Sarah McCorquodale for a swift and complete recovery.
