Ukrainian scientist Dr. Elena Bodnar, has created an emergency, life-saving bra that can be switched into a face mask to protect against lethal chemical explosions, biological hazards and violent, unpredictable attacks.
The bra that Dr. Elena has created looks like an ordinary bra, but it’s far from ordinary. It could be life saving in dangerous situations.
The EBra works very simple: you can take it off, separate both cups from one another and place your mouth and nose into the cup’s interior. You should also use the bra strap over your head to tighten the mask, just like airplane oxygen masks (you’ve probably seen the how-to thousands of times waiting to takeoff!). The bra converts into two protective masks, one for the one who wears it, and another for a needy bystander.
For this amazing invention, Dr. Elena Bodnar won the 2009 Ig Nobel Public Health Prize, a spoof of the actual Nobel Prize, which acknowledges 10 scientific achievements that ‘first make people laugh, and then make them think’.
On the acceptance speech she made everyone laugh with a statement: “It takes only 25 seconds for average woman [sic] to use this personal protective device. Five seconds to remove, convert and apply your own mask, and 20 seconds to wonder who the lucky man is she is going to save“.
The idea came to its fruition after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. “If people had had cheap, readily available gas masks in the first hours after the disaster…they may have avoided breathing in Iodine-131, which causes radiation sickness,” she explains. As an addition, she adds that the mask can be used to protect ourselves from dust storms, fires, or even flu outbreak. “You have to be prepared all the time, at any place, at any moment, and practically every woman wears a bra.“
There were plans for a counterpart device for men in the works, as she wants everyone to be able to wear one, but nothing has been revealed yet.
