Gold Logie Icon, Star Of Division 4 And Underbelly, Dies At 93

Gerard Kennedy, a legendary Australian actor, passed away. He was most recognized for his roles in the groundbreaking police drama Division 4 on Channel Nine and Underbelly. He was ninety-three.

The veteran performer’s family friend announced his death on Monday.

Kennedy, Vale Gerard, 1932–2025. They started on social media with, “An iconic Australian actor of many decades.”

“Well-remembered by Prisoner fans for his portrayal as terrorist Al in The Wentworth Siege episodes.”

Kennedy, who was born in Perth in 1932, had an incredible five-decade career in Australian journalism.

He was a two-time Gold Logie winner, winning the prize in 1971 and 1972.

Kennedy’s performance in Division 4 earned him two Best Actor Logies in 1972 and 1973.

He became well-known in the late 1960s when he starred opposite Wendy Hughes in the spy drama Hunter on Channel Nine.  

Throughout his illustrious career, Kennedy went on to star in some of Australia’s most well-known shows.

He worked on Neighbours, Blue Heelers, A Country Practice, and Underbelly.

In addition, he costarred with Vince Colosimo in Fat Tony and Co. and John Jarratt in the 2013 horror film Wolf Creek 2.

He celebrated a well-earned retirement after making his farewell appearance in two episodes of the ABC drama Glitch in 2015.

Throughout his remarkable career, Kennedy collaborated with some of Australia’s most renowned artists, such as Andrew Daddo, Lisa McCune, and John Wood.

Social media was used by grieving fans to honor Kennedy.

“Vale Gerard,” wrote his The Flying Doctors co-star Liz Burch.

“More than an actor, Gerard was a quiet force – respected by peers, loved by audiences and remembered as a true professional,” another person wrote. 

“He leaves behind a legacy that defines an era of Australian storytelling and remains a benchmark for integrity and excellence in the performing arts.”

“Gerard was a great actor and a true gentleman. Rest in peace,” a third added. 

Phyllis Ophel, the well-known Australian actress Kennedy’s mother, costarred alongside him in a Division 4 episode.  

Chrisanya, Kennedy’s daughter, is his surviving child.
