Doomsday Clock 2025: Researchers Unveil A New Time And The Imminence Of Disaster For Humanity

As scientists get ready to reveal the Doomsday Clock’s 2025 setting, the world will soon see how close it is to catastrophe.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists developed the Doomsday Clock in 1947 as a symbolic indicator of humanity’s distance from a worldwide calamity.

The apocalypse is symbolized by midnight, and every yearly update highlights how close the planet is to unavoidable terrible events. “It is a metaphor, a reminder of the perils we must address if we are to survive on the planet,” according to the clock’s official Web page.

In June 1947, the Bulletin’s first magazine issue featured the clock for the first time. Its dire prophesies have prompted some people to take drastic measures in anticipation of possible end-of-the-world situations over the decades.

2025 Announcement

The Doomsday Clock is presently 89 seconds to midnight, which is the closest it has ever been to Doomsday, according to a statement made today.

Compared to 2024, which stayed the same as the time set in 2023, this time is one second closer to midnight.

Experts cited climate change and 2024 as the “hottest year on record” as their explanations for the moment. They also cited “disturbing rhetoric” in support of nuclear weapons.

The Chair of The Elders, former Colombian President, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Juan Manuel Santos also emphasized the increasing danger of artificial intelligence and how its intellect is starting to eclipse human intelligence.

Santos went on to highlight the “stark warning” that underlies today’s revelation, saying, “At 89 seconds to midnight, the Doomsday Clock stands closer to catastrophe than at any moment in its history.”

On TheBulletin.org, a statement from the board reads, “In setting the clock one second closer to midnight, we send a stark signal: Because the world is already perilously close to the precipice, a move of even a single second should be taken as an indication of extreme danger and an unmistakable warning that every second of delay in reversing course increases the probability of global disaster.”

How Does the Doomsday Clock Work?

The minute hand of the clock indicates how near humanity is to catastrophe, edging closer or further away from midnight according to worldwide threats.

The Bulletin’s Science and Security Board makes the annual adjustments after consulting with its Board of Sponsors, which consists of nine Nobel laureates.

Threats including biosecurity, disruptive technology, nuclear peril, climate change, and national security are taken into consideration when making the decision.

Juan Manuel Santos, Daniel Holz, Herb Lin, Suzet McKinney, Manpreet Sethi, and Robert Socolow will all be speaking during today’s announcement.

Why Is the Doomsday Clock Important?

The continuous war in Ukraine, the struggle between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, and the enormous political unrest during 2024’s historic election year are just a few of the major worldwide issues that have occurred in the previous year.

Political environments have also changed as a result of new world leaders, such as US President Donald Trump.

The scientists’ discussions regarding the location of the clock for 2025 are influenced by these and other variables.

What Happens if the Clock Reaches Midnight?

Amid worries about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the use of nuclear weapons, the clock was advanced to 90 seconds before midnight in 2023. It remained in place until 2024 and represented the point that was closest to catastrophe since the clock’s inception.

In the past, when tensions throughout the world have increased, the minute hand has gotten closer to midnight.

It was moved forward by 30 seconds to two minutes before midnight in 2018, although it stayed unchanged from 2019 to 2022.

With the conclusion of the Cold War in 1991, the minute hand was the furthest from midnight ever. The first agreement to call for significant reductions in the strategic nuclear weapons stockpiles of both the US and the USSR was the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.

The clock hand was therefore set to 17 minutes until midnight by the Bulletin.

Naturally, nothing will really happen when the clock strikes midnight, but it is a warning from some of the brightest minds on the planet that humanity will have gone too far and that the harm we have done is irreparable, leading to our destruction.

According to Rachel Bronson, CEO of The Bulletin, “when the clock is at midnight, that means there’s been some sort of nuclear exchange or catastrophic climate change that’s wiped out humanity.”
