Children Aged 6 And 7 Found Dead — Grandmother Arrested At Coonabarabran Residence

After the grandmother called authorities to request assistance, her boys were discovered dead at a regional property, and a woman was taken into custody.

After receiving reports of a welfare issue, emergency personnel arrived at a residence in Coonabarabran, central-west NSW, at 2:00 pm on Monday.

The two deceased children, ages six and seven, were discovered at the residence with the 66-year-old grandmother.

After that, the woman was brought to the hospital for additional evaluation, where she is now being watched by police.

On Monday night, a crime scene was set up at the house, which is located outside of Coonabarabran.

A representative for the NSW Police stated, “Enquiries are ongoing.”

“There is no ongoing threat to the community. Police are not looking for anyone else.”

No accusations have been made.

According to police sources who spoke to the Sydney Morning Herald, the grandmother allegedly informed staff members that the sons were dead when she called the Department of Communities and Justice.

It is understood that local police were dispatched by government employees to conduct an urgent welfare check.

The sombre finding was made by police and paramedics who stormed onto the property.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb described the fatalities as a “terrible, terrible tragedy” and said State Crime Command has now dispatched detectives from Sydney’s homicide squad to support local police.

With the surrounding region included, Coonabarabran is a small town with fewer than 3,500 residents.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the state would “share in the community of Coonabarabran’s grief at the loss of two young boys who had their entire futures ahead of them.”

In the meantime, a 60-year-old Brisbane lady was accused of manslaughter for the baby’s death the previous year.

On April 3, 2024, police were called to a property in Darra, in the south-west of Brisbane, after receiving allegations of an unconscious and non-breathing newborn.

At the scene, the 11-month-old boy was pronounced dead.

To look into his death, police launched Operation Whisky Nocturne, and on Monday, detectives charged a 63-year-old Darra lady with manslaughter.

On June 4, she is scheduled to appear in Richland Magistrates Court.
