Bella Ramsey Opens Up About Mixed Emotions After Coming Out As Non-Binary
Speaking candidly about their decision to come out as non-binary, Bella Ramsey acknowledged that they had some regrets.
In January 2023, while promoting The Last of Us, the British actress, then 19 years old, revealed that they are genderfluid and learned about the harmful nature of the internet.
Now, two years on the 21-year-old has touched on the matter which they never meant to become headline news, just as season two of The Last of Us is finally among us – which airs on Sundays at 9pm ET on HBO.
Ramsey was asked to summarize their feelings about coming out as non-binary in the way that they did in an interview with The Guardian.

“Part of me looks back and I wish that I didn’t, because I didn’t want it to become a headline and a big thing,” they explain.
“And obviously it was going to, and I didn’t really understand that at the time. And I wasn’t really prepared for that. But on the other hand, people have said to me that it’s been very helpful for them seeing some representation.”
“So it’s been a mixed bag, but overall, I think it was a good thing, just for me living more freely, without feeling like I’m keeping a secret.”
Since then, Ramsey’s opinions on the subject have evolved. They have expressed that they would prefer to talk about other subjects and are tired of their gender and sexual orientation being the most discussed ones.
They continued: “But now I’m like, ‘I’ll talk about it, but I don’t want it to be the focus any more.’ I guess I’m just quite chill with it. And I want everyone else to be as chill with it basically.”
It comes after Ramsey, who is from Nottingham, England, decided to delete their Instagram account last week, citing their collaborations with Jesse Eisenberg on Resistance and Kit Harrington on Game of Thrones as reasons.
“Those are the two actors who I just thought were the coolest people to ever walk the earth, and neither of them had social media,” Ramsey told the publication.
“I remember them just being so normal and funny and interesting. They were famous because they were great at something, not because they were celebrities. They never pushed themselves out there and made themselves more famous.”
Additionally, they acknowledged that they only created their Instagram account in the first place because several phony accounts were impersonating them.
