Iphone Users Stunned After Learning The Real Difference Between ‘No Caller ID’ And ‘Unknown Caller’

Have you ever puzzled why some phone calls appear as “unknown caller” and others as “No Caller ID”?

It turns out that there is a real explanation for this, and it goes beyond the inconsistency of phone manufacturers.

Modern smartphones and mobile phones give you the ability to pre-screen calls by informing you whether you are being contacted by a random number or someone you know each time your phone buzzes, in contrast to the early days of telephones when you would find out who was calling after answering.

Naturally, this does not apply to situations in which the other party has purposefully left their number unanswered, but let’s face it, nobody answers those unless we are awaiting a callback from the general practitioner.

However, you may have observed that occasionally your phone will display “No Caller ID” and other times “unknown caller” if you frequently receive calls from unknown numbers.

The subject has been asked a lot on places like Reddit and Apple community support, so if you’ve ever wondered, you’re not alone.

“Somebody called me with the caller ID of ‘unknown caller’. What does that mean,” asked a confused Redditor in one thread, adding: “I’m a bit spooked.”

What is the reason for this?

Difference between ‘No Caller ID’ and ‘unknown number’ explained

‘No Caller ID’ is a number that rings because the caller has chosen to withhold their number. There are two ways to accomplish this: either change your settings to limit your number on all outgoing calls, or dial 141 before inputting someone’s phone number.

Scammers and spammers usually do this (28 percent of anonymous calls are scams or fraud, according to Norton), but law enforcement and medical professionals also use it for call-backs.

Therefore, deciding whether to answer the phone or ignore it can be difficult.

Silencing calls from individuals who do not provide their caller ID is another option, although it can cause problems if the caller is a real one.

In the meanwhile, calls that appear as “unknown caller” are probably the result of mobile network problems.

‘Unknown callers’ can occur for a number of reasons, Norton notes, including:

  • Issues with the network which prevent the caller ID from reaching your device
  • Issues with your carrier’s call filtering system
  • International calling

This implies that the person on the other end of the phone may be anyone, including your mother or someone who is stealing your bank account information.
