Off The Record
Elderly Man, 87, Comes Home From Hospital And Finds His House Emptied – Story Of The Day
Chris Harvey’s daughter sent her son, Peter, to see him in the hospital to see how he was doing and to make sure his home was prepared for his return. However, Peter and his spouse had an alternative plan. After returning home to see it in a state of disrepair, Chris heard his grandson say something startling.
“Don’t worry, Dad. I’ll figure something out. When her father, 87-year-old Chris Harvey, contacted her from the hospital,” Angelina said, “But I can’t visit you at all because I don’t have any more PTO at work.”
After having a heart attack, he thought it might be more serious and contacted 911. However, before he could go home, the doctors stated they wanted to check a few items and do more tests. He called his Miami-based daughter to ask if she could travel back to Austin, Texas, to assist him.

However, she was unable to. “All right, sweetheart. Holding his phone to his ear in his hospital bed,” he said, “I think the doctors are just worried about my health at my age, and they’ll tell me more soon enough.”
“Calm down, Hannah. Everything is alright. It only temporarily disrupts our preparations,” he acquiesced. Plans?
The doctors asked Chris to stay in the hospital for a few days while they checked everything and determined what he needed to be treated. After a while, they hung up.
“You must visit Austin to see how your grandfather is doing.” “He’s by himself,” Angelina urged her son Peter.
“I don’t know if I can, Mom,” he got back. During their phone conversation, Angelina refused to accept a no.
“You must be present for your grandfather, Peter. After this, who knows how long he will live, particularly if his heart begins to fail? And keep in mind that you are his only grandson,” Angelina attempted to persuade him. “He always promised that you would inherit his belongings and home after he died. To ensure he can live comfortably for however long he has left, you might want to inspect the house and determine what repairs might be necessary. Additionally, it’s a wonderful moment to strengthen your relationship with him.”
His mother assumed Peter might have hung up because he was silent for a moment. However, his tone was odd when he finally responded. “All right, all right. I’ll leave. I’ll take Hannah along. Since I haven’t taken a vacation in a while, I believe I can request a little time off from work.”
“All right. I’m grateful, son. I trust you to do your best to assist your grandfather, but my work would not budge. She went on, happy that her father would not be left alone after being released from the hospital, I love you, dear.”
“Mom, I also adore you. Goodbye.”
Regretfully, Angelina was unaware of her son’s true thoughts.
After a few days, the doctors reviewed Chris’ test findings and finally recommended a number of drugs. When they discharged him from the hospital, they cautioned him against overstressing himself since, even after he recovered, he still needed to take care of his health.
Chris nodded in agreement with all of their explanations, but he wasn’t really listening. Angelina informed him that Peter was coming to stay with him the day before, but she didn’t call, so he was concerned.
He hoped to visit his grandson at the house, but he didn’t have his phone number. In order to get home from the hospital, he took a taxi.
Unexpectedly, he found some furniture on his front lawn and knew it was his. Furthermore, he recalled that the paramedics who transported him to the hospital had fully closed his door, which was only slightly open. What was happening? But when he walked in, the most startling thing occurred.
The house was deserted. His credenza, his military souvenirs, and the paintings on his walls. Everything he couldn’t see outside, including the kitchen table and chairs, was gone. In several places, there were multiple plastic sheets, as though the house was being painted or otherwise constructed.
“Hello?” He heard footsteps coming from the corridor leading to the bedrooms and yelled out to the utterly vacant room.
“Grandpa?” Perplexed by his appearance, Peter inquired. Nevertheless, Chris ignored that response. He exhaled a sigh of comfort.
“Hey, Peter! God be praised!” I believed that everything I possessed had been stolen by someone breaking in. “My dear boy, what’s going on?” He walked over to give his grandson a firm, masculine embrace after asking him.
“Oh, well. Indeed.” With his lips pursed, Peter returned the hug and muttered, “No one broke in.”
At last, Chris became aware of his peculiar behavior. “What’s going on then?”
“I… well, we actually wanted to surprise you,” he said.
“We?”
“Yes, both Hannah and I.” “She’s here,” Peter said, turning to call his wife in the corridor. “Honey!”
“What?” she said, her eyes widening as she saw Chris. “Well, Mr. Harvey. Hi there.”
“Hello, sweetheart! It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Chris grinned and gave his grandson’s wife a cheek kiss, saying, “I haven’t seen you since the wedding.” “So, tell me, what’s going on with my house?”
Hannah and Peter exchanged a fleeting, strange side-eye glance, but Peter was the first to respond. Before you were discharged from the hospital, we planned to renovate it. We hoped this would help you feel better because it needed some major TLC. However, you left earlier than we anticipated.
Chris thought about how considerate the two young people in his living room were and grinned broadly. “That’s fantastic! Even so, I hope you’re not spending a lot of money.”
“Oh no, no. Do not be concerned.” Hannah put her hands in her pockets and added, “I know a guy.” The elder man didn’t see that she was grinning awkwardly.
“Calm down.” How about my belongings? “Where are they?”
“They’re in storage right now, with the exception of a few items we wish to give as gifts. The garbage men are waiting to take those up outside.” With an odd pause, Peter added, “We had to put it there for the remodel.” However, everything is still in the bedrooms. “Do not be concerned. We’ll have a good night’s sleep.”
“I’m grateful! My guy, thank you so much. You’re incredible!” Chris said, giving them each a hug at the same time. Seeing his family again made him incredibly pleased, and he understood how much they cared for him by doing something so considerate. “Listen now. I’ll be back shortly, but I need to fill some medications.”
“Sure!” Hannah and Peter both said the same thing and laughed uncomfortably.
Chris gave them a brief scowl but didn’t give their demeanor any thought. He walked to the neighborhood pharmacy and headed out.
He didn’t see Peter or Hannah in the living room when he came back a few minutes later. He went to ask them what they wanted for dinner after hearing their voices coming from Angelina’s former bedroom. But he was stopped in his tracks by what Hannah said.
“What are we going to do, you idiot?” Chris had never heard her treat her spouse in such a manner before, and she insulted him.
“Calm down, Hannah. Everything is alright. It just temporarily disrupts our plans,” he reassured. Plans?
“A little? A BIT? You informed me that this would be our home and that he was dying. We’re spending so much money on it because of this. We still pay rent, so you thought I was going to take money out of my wallet to help fix someone else’s house?” Hannah asked, almost in jest.
Chris’s palm shot to his mouth to stop any sound from escaping as his eyes grew wild. He was interested in hearing what further was said.
“It’s okay, Hannah. He has a lot of money stored up, and eventually I will own the house. Just consider it an investment,” Peter reassured, his voice brimming with frustration.
Hannah, though, was furious. “NO! I don’t care for him, and we won’t spend any more money! We’re taking a plane flight home tomorrow! This was a time waster.”
“We can’t leave this house like this!”
“YES, WE WILL AND WE CAN!” Chris finally lost it when she yelled, “That’s final!” at Peter. Pretending to have just returned from the pharmacy, he made his way back to the front door.
“I wanted to thank them for all the work they’ve done on my house… because I’m going to enjoy it for the rest of my life.”
Both of them pretended that nothing was wrong when he called out to them. They were really friendly with Chris and discussed what to serve for supper. Now that he was aware of the reality, though, it was time to discipline them severely.
When Chris eventually cleared his throat and spoke, they were sitting on the vacant floor of the living room, enjoying one of Peter’s favorite meals: spaghetti and meatballs.
He started by saying, “Peter, I wanted to talk to you about something important,” and he saw that Peter and Hannah seemed to get more animated. “I’ve been considering relocating permanently to a nursing home. I don’t want to be alone here in case of another emergency. You two should have the house, in my opinion, and it’s the proper decision.”
Hannah’s and Peter’s mouths fell open, and they exchanged delighted glances. With obvious delight, his grandson questioned, “Are you serious?”
“Yes, I’m serious.”
“Grandpa, thank you! This is a privilege! We’ll make this place seem fantastic!” At last, Peter replied, and Hannah returned his appreciation.
Peter and Hannah did their best to renovate the property over the course of the following few weeks. In fact, they had stored a few of Chris’s belongings, but they also disposed of some old items, and he pretended that nothing was wrong. However, it wasn’t.
Chris proposed hosting a housewarming party after the house was finished. He informed Peter and Hannah that they should begin getting ready to go into the nursing home permanently because he would be moving there shortly.
They chose to invite a few buddies who took a plane from Miami to Texas since they were so eager. For a time, everything was fantastic. They conversed. They consumed food. It was a joyous gathering. Before Chris stood up from the table and drew everyone’s attention, he had been acting the part the entire time.
The older guy started, “I would like to make a toast…to my grandson and his lovely wife,” and everyone in the room shouted rapidly as the pair hugged and turned to face Chris. “I wanted to thank them for all the work they’ve done on my house… because I’m going to enjoy it for the rest of my life.”
Chris startled the couple’s pals with his toast because they thought he was moving out. Peter and Hannah, meantime, were in disbelief, their expressions showing their bewilderment.
Did you know that they believed I was about to pass away when they came here? Assuming it was already theirs, they began remodeling the entire house, gave away some of my belongings, and got to work. “And they were going to just up and leave me here with a half-remodeled, empty house when I returned from the hospital, which they didn’t expect,” he said to the guests, who began to realize how unpleasant the evening was becoming.
“Grandpa, why don’t we speak privately for a second?” Chris shook his head as Peter made the suggestion.
“Not necessary. That day, I overheard you two talking. You two came here and promised your mother that you would look after me, but you ended up claiming this place as your own. Well, Peter, it will never occur. I have previously made changes to my will. Everyone was shocked when he disclosed, This house is going to charity when I’m gone.”
Hannah was flushed and wanted to cause a stir, but she didn’t want to cause further humiliation.
Once more, Chris drew everyone’s attention. “Now…,” he said, clearing his throat and speaking louder. “EVERYONE GET OUT OF MY HOUSE RIGHT NOW BEFORE I CALL THE POLICE!”
The pals of Peter and Hannah didn’t need to be reminded twice. Chris still wanted to speak, so Peter continued to yell at him as they rushed to escape. The older man, however, was not interested in hearing any justifications. He yelled, “GET OUT!” and Peter and his spouse departed.
Chris explained to Angelina exactly what her kid had done and what they were planning together the next day. Knowing it would shatter his daughter’s heart, he refrained from telling her sooner. Now that everything was out there, though, she had to know.
Although Angelina was embarrassed by her child, she also disapproved of Chris’s deceit. But there was nothing she could do about it. “You’re correct, Dad. It’s your home. However, are you at ease ending your connection with Peter in that manner alone?”
“He cut it off the day he made the decision to take my house and murder me too soon, honey.” He cautioned his daughter, “Be careful, because you never know what they might do to you,” and they stopped talking.
Chris lived for additional eleven years. And just as he had planned, his attorney sold his home and gave the money—along with the remainder of Chris’s estate—to an organization that supports the elderly.
