Airline Tragedy Followed Cancer Loss: Sisters Orphaned In Catastrophic Week

Two weeks after their mother passed away from cancer, two little daughters lost their father in the July 12 Air India jet tragedy, leaving them orphans.

Heartbreaking reports state that Arjun Patoliya, a 37-year-old British national, was one of the 270 people killed in last week’s aviation tragedy, which was the deadliest to strike India in more than 30 years. The jet had issues from the moment it took off, and an investigation is still underway to determine exactly what went wrong with the aircraft, which crashed less than a minute after taking off.

In order to disperse his late wife Bharti’s ashes in her hometown of Gujarat, Arjun had been travelling to the nation to carry out her final wishes. According to reports, Bharti passed away two weeks ago following a “courageous” fight with cancer.

Due to Arjun’s death, Bharti and his two little daughters, who are only four and eight years old, are now orphans.

The relatives of those killed in the tragedy are still in disbelief at the lack of tangible answers they have received thus far. The family of Arjun and Bharti, who have already experienced two catastrophes in less than 20 days, is one of them.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established in the wake of Arjun and Bharti’s passing to assist gather funds for their children’s futures.

“In a span of just 18 days, two young sisters — only 4 and 8 years old — have lost both of their beloved parents,” the bio of the fundraiser reads.

“Their mother, Bharti Patoliya, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Fulfilling her final wish, her husband, Arjun Patoliya, travelled to India to scatter her ashes in her homeland in Gujarat. But on his journey home to their daughters, tragedy struck again — Arjun was among those lost in the Air India Flight Tragedy in June 2025, shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad.”

“Arjun left to bid farewell to his wife, never returned to the children they both raised. Now, these two beautiful young girls have been left without parents — their world turned upside down in just over two weeks.”

The total amount received so far is almost £576,000, which “will go directly to a legal trust or the appointed guardians to ensure every penny is dedicated to the girls’ needs.”

Kanchan Patoliya, Arjun’s mother, told the Indian Express that she or her younger son Gopal would take care of the girls.

She explained, “Gopal arrived at Ahmedabad on Friday evening. Once we complete all the rituals, we will sit down and decide the future of both girls. If needed, I will fly to London to stay at my younger son’s place and take care of my granddaughters.”
