Experts Reveal How Much Life Just One Soda Can Really Take

Given that consuming a single can of soda can reportedly shorten one’s lifetime by an alarming amount, it may be time for President Donald Trump to retire his emotional support for Diet Coke.

What we may and cannot consume in 2025 is a minefield. It could be fatal, so increase your intake of water, protein, and fibre without going overboard. United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has pledged to make “America Healthy Again” in response to the startling increase in colon cancer cases and the startling harm that consuming highly processed foods can do to our bodies.

We are all aware of the detrimental effects smoking cigarettes may have on your life expectancy, but you might be surprised to learn that you might be consuming your favourite soft drink minutes away by simply picking up a cool can.

According to a concerning study from the University of Michigan, processed foods and beverages can shorten your life. The researchers created a Health Nutritional Index by analysing 5,800 items and ranking them according to how long they could take you. They did this by calculating the amount of fat, calories, sugar, and additives in each gramme and converting them to a conventional serving size.

Writing in The Conversation, co-authors Katerina Stylianou and Olivier Jolliet said, “On a daily basis, it’s hard to know how much individual choices, such as buying mixed greens at the grocery store or ordering chicken wings at a sports bar, might translate to overall personal and environmental health. That’s the gap we hope to fill with our research.”

You’ll be surprised to hear that grabbing for a can of soda could be losing you twelve minutes of your life. Both may wish to rethink their positions given that Elon Musk’s diet was rumoured to comprise eight cans of the dark beverage per day and that Donald Trump has a separate button for calling the White House.

Although it’s crucial to remember that the University of Michigan study only refers to sodas in general and doesn’t specifically name the beverage, we already know that Diet Coke can have an unanticipated effect on the body. While a Diet Coke contains aspartame, it does not contain the same sugars as a regular Coke.

You might lose 12 minutes from drinking a can of Pepsi, but that’s nothing compared to the 24 minutes you would lose from eating prosciutto, or the 36 minutes a hot dog would lose.

A 30g serving of nuts and seeds is thought to add 25 minutes to a healthy life, so not everything will send you tumbling towards death. Crucially, you may add 48 minutes to your life each day by replacing just 10% of your daily caloric intake from processed meats and cattle with a variety of nutritious grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and some seafood.

According to Jolliet, “Our findings demonstrate that small, targeted substitutions offer a feasible and powerful strategy to achieve significant health and environmental benefits without needing dramatic dietary shifts.”
