Carrie Underwood Faces Backlash As ‘American Idol’ Fans Claim She Plays Favorites
Following a thrilling evening of Disney-themed performances, three exceptional contestants are still vying for the title of “American Idol”.
During the most recent broadcast of “American Idol,” Carrie Underwood attracted attention, but her looks weren’t enough to win over everyone. A number of viewers criticised her judging technique and demanded that she be replaced for the upcoming season.

Ahead of the May 12 “American Idol” episode, Underwood adopted a fantasy aesthetic by dressing like Rapunzel in a beautiful purple gown with a contemporary twist. The dress combined bold flair with elegance with its stunning thigh-high split and beautiful floral embroidery at the front.
With purple flower accessories that added an additional touch of enchantment, her long blond hair cascaded down to her silver stilettos. With the caption, “It’s a #DisneyNight fit check! #CUonIDOL,” Underwood posted the ensemble to Instagram shortly before the Disney-themed show premiered.
That evening, the top five competitors competed for America’s vote by performing twice, once as villains and once with a song about heroes.
Many viewers were more interested in Underwood’s judgement than on her clothing, which attracted notice for its quirky reference to Rapunzel. Online, her criticisms generated a lot of responses.
One blunt viewer didn’t mince words, penning, ““Get rid of her. Her bias is showing.”” Frustration continued as another viewer shared, “I wish it was a way to vote you off Definitely plays favorites and it’s cringey to watch.”
Among the critics, one conflicted fan expressed, “I love Carrie but this outfit was not it! And why critiquing Jamal so harshly? when the other guys do the same things that he does…he’s incredible! And i’m so shocked that Gabby was sent home [sic].”
An individual echoed a similar concern, “Yep she definitely didn’t like Jamal.” A viewer even appealed for changes, “Jelly Roll pleaseeeeee [sic]she’s got to go!” A disheartened fan didn’t hold back their disappointment, saying, “I hope you don’t be a judge on this show again you bring fake energy. Please don’t come back.”
However, some viewers were quick to defend the judge, with one fan encouraging her, “You’re still going to get criticized, so you might as well do whatever you want.”
Another admirer praised her, “Loved you as a judge this year. People don’t realize that you are dressed as Rapunzel tonight ….so much hate in this world. Love you, Carrie.”
Finally, someone else chimed in with a hopeful message, “Carrie I enjoyed watching you as a judge on American Idol, this year!I hope you come back year!![sic]”
Host Ryan Seacrest led the evening as she joined other judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie in reducing the competition to its top three finalists on the night when Underwood received harsh criticism from the public. Following two performances apiece, Thunderstorm Artis and Slater Nalley were eliminated.
Nalley sang “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from “Toy Story” and “Born to be Wild” from “D3: The Mighty Ducks,” while Thunderstorm performed “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” from “Cinderella” and “Find Yourself” from “Cars.”
Breanna Nix, Jamal Roberts, and John Foster advanced to the final. Foster sang “The Bare Necessities” from “The Jungle Book” and “Rainbow Connection” from “The Muppet Movie.”
“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” from “Remember the Titans” and “Beauty and the Beast” from the iconic movie of the same name were two of Roberts’ standout performances.
Breanna moved forward after singing “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” from “The Parent Trap” and “You’ll Be in My Heart” from “Tarzan.”
As the surviving competitors prepare for the final on Sunday, May 18, the judges were incredibly impressed with them and provided insightful, supportive remarks.
Fans are still waiting to see if Carrie Underwood’s judgement will live up to their expectations as the finals draws near. But more than just fashion criticism is frequently drawn to the singer’s fit checks.
When “American Idol” posted a video of her whirling to showcase her outfit for the program on Instagram in March 2025, some internet users reacted negatively. A flood of negative emotions erupted from viewers speculating that she had changed her appearance.
Underwood said, “Fit Check!” as the video started, then spun around while the camera panned down to show her attire. She was dressed in what looked like a frock, with a big matching bow around her neck and a blue denim jacket with a zip at the back.

Her black-and-white frayed denim skirt was ruffled. Gold buttons decorated the front pockets on her hips. The blue denim strip that ran from the top of the skirt to the bottom of the garment also had buttons.
Before admirers get a glance of her chic blue denim heels, her toned legs were on display.
Underwood flicked her blond ponytail and stared straight into the camera as the video drew to a close. The caption on the video read, “Bow yes she did. ✨ #IDOL #fitcheck.”
After observing her expression, one person said, “What did she do to her lips?” One more individual added to the critique, stating, “She looks too different too [sic] much filler in her face and lips.”
Another person lamented, “To much done to her face . [sic] She was beautiful without all that,” while one netizen commented, “BIG LIPS.” Meanwhile, someone else observed, “She looks different.”
“What happened to her face????” said a worried individual. Some, on the other hand, reacted favourably and thought her appearance was fine.
One person said, “She is so beautiful. And such a sweet spirit!” while another added, “She’s in tip-top shape, totally fit.” Despite the criticism, Underwood confidently embraced her bold look, proving she isn’t afraid to stand out as she judges on the show.
After every broadcast, “American Idol” is frequently on fans’ minds. On May 4, 2025, Miranda Lambert enthralled the audience with a furious rendition of her popular song “Kerosene.”
The country music artist brought her trademark excitement to the competition when she performed the title tune from her 2005 album and served as a guest mentor on the Sunday night show. However, there was a great deal of disagreement among netizens regarding whether or not her performance was exceptional.

Lambert controlled the stage with assured ease while sporting a dramatic black ensemble with silver accents, flared trousers and a belt in the western style. A neon-lit sign with her name and a starry background provided dramatic impact as her long blond hair cascaded while she sang.
She sang a polished, authentic version of the fierce ballad that catapulted her into country superstar with a real band in the background.
Online responses from Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter swiftly flooded in, despite her vocals remaining consistent throughout.
One viewer wrote, “She was giving us bare minimum stage presence and I love that for her,” while another said, “Plugged my ears the entire performance! I can’t stand her! Especially after the whole selfie situation. I’ll never pay to see her.”
Another audience member provided a more negative assessment, saying that although they value Lambert as an artist, the performance fell short of their expectations. They reported problems with sound mixing, believing her vocals were overshadowed by the music.
One critic remarked, “Everybody looked bored… even Miranda is an ENERGY DRAINER…[sic],” while another pointed to the show’s judge, Underwood, asking, “Why did Carrie look so bored?”
The harsh tone was repeated by a netizen who saw Underwood as “totally unenthused” during Lambert’s performance. In response, another spectator implied that Underwood wasn’t the only one who appeared disinterested and that many others shared this sentiment. Someone else asked, “Jealousy?” and presented an other viewpoint.
Along with Underwood, some viewers thought that Bryan, another judge, seemed uninterested in the portion. According to one observer, Lambert doesn’t seem like a particularly gregarious person, and her attendance on the show seemed forced, making everyone around her appear uneasy.
Amid the criticism, other fans focused on her appearance, offering praise like, “She looks awesome lost a lot of weight,” and “Miranda, you’re absolutely amazing! I love you.”
Lambert’s appearance drew more comments from spectators. Some highlighted her vivacious appearance and praised her for bringing “fire and sass” to the stage.
Another user agreed, pointing out that she looked fantastic overall, while another user cited pop culture weight loss trends.
