World’s ‘Oldest’ Message In A Bottle Washed Up Ashore After 150 Years At Sea With A Shocking Message
It’s always exciting to find something interesting on the beach, but most people don’t anticipate finding an antique that is over a century old.
Someone on social media thinks they have found the oldest message ever found in a bottle.
The discovery was shared with her followers on TikTok by user @asmythco, who expressed her amazement at her good fortune.
She said: “I found a message in a bottle on the beach on July 3. The note inside said yacht Neptune off Atlantic city New Jersey, August 6-76.”
“The outside of the bottle reads Barr and Brother Philadelphia.”
Although August 1976 makes the bottle rather old, it can’t be the oldest, you might be thinking.
You’re right, that’s the reason the TikTok user looked a little farther.
By investigating the bottle, she was able to determine its age and the period of use.
She continued: “The hunt for another Barr and Brother bottle ended today with the help of a Philadelphia Inquirer reporter.”
Then she pointed to the date and remarked, “Look at it,” indicating that the bottle was probably made before 1900. This indicates that the communication was probably sent in 1876 as opposed to 1976.
She closed the video by saying: “This makes this the oldest message in a bottle ever found.”

The user described in another TikTok how she located the boat and determined its year of manufacture.
The user came into a digital copy of the 1874 Philadelphia Inquirer, which had an announcement about the ship’s construction.
The April 24, 1874, report said: “Captain Samuel Gale, of Atlantic City, New Jersey, has just built a splendid yacht, which he has christened ‘Neptune’ after the Neptune Club of this city.”
Social media users expressed their shock at this discovery and remarked on how different things would have been in the past.
One user wrote: “They were celebrating the 100th anniversary of the nation just a month before. is this really the oldest message in a bottle ever found? Lucky to have run across you; this is truly awesome.”
Someone else said: “As someone who collects/digs for antique bottles, those squat sodas are pretty iconic to the 1860s-80s period.”
While a third penned: “On the centennial, incredible. Imagine celebrating the 4th in 1876. Drinking with friends on a boat…. Not even thinking that we’d be doing the same over 100 years later.”
Well, you never know what you might discover at the beach, do you?
