Mom Sends Grave Warning To Teens Getting Baked From Nutmeg
A mom in Georgia recently posted a video on TikTok warning other parents that kids can get baked if they sniff a popular spice in the kitchen.
The video that went popular says that teens are “nutmeg intoxicated,” which is a poisonous state caused by the spice nutmeg, which is used to flavor both sweet and savory foods.
Read on to find out more about the mind-altering drug that, if taken in large amounts, can be dangerous and even kill you.
On March 11, a mother on TikTok who goes by the name Lakeview Living posted a video that has since gone viral. In it, she talks to teens and parents about a new trend called “sniffing.”
Almost 600,000 people have seen the video, which has the comment “Really guys?! NUTMEG?! Where do they come up with this stuff??”
In the viral post, the mom says: “Today, I was talking with one of my teacher friends and she was like, ‘Girl, trying to stay one step ahead of these kids is exhausting.’”
She says that during a “backpack check,” teachers found that some students were carrying small bottles of nutmeg. She calls it “flipping wild.”
So they wouldn’t get yelled at, the kids said the spice was for “culinary class.”
But when the teacher told the cooking teacher about the pumpkin pie spice, the cooking teacher asked, “What are you talking about? We’re not making anything with nutmeg.”
The shocked mom then told them that the school’s “resource officer” heard what they were saying and took the sweet, nutty substance away before suspending the sneaky kids.
“Y’all can’t get your homework done, but you can figure out how to get high off of nutmeg?” the mother scolds the smart but lazy teens. “Make it make sense.”
The magazine Medical News Today says that when two teaspoons of it are eaten, it gives people a “‘high’ similar to that of some hallucinogenic drugs. The name for this is nutmeg intoxication.”
Myristicin is a chemical substance found in nutmeg. When eaten, it is broken down by the body into methylenedioxyamphetamine (MMDA), a psychedelic drug.
“People with nutmeg intoxication experience a variety of symptoms, including drowsiness and hallucinations.”
Nutmeg poisoning is also dangerous and could be fatal.

Many of the woman’s fans who were also parents were worried about spice sniffing.
“This has been a thing for years. There’s a substance in it that is psychoactive but not in a fun way. You get the worst hangover of your life for a 10 min high,” one TikToker shares.
A mother, praising teachers for keeping an eye of her kids – all of the generation that succeeds Gen Z – adds: “As a mom of [four] Gen Alpha…I am so thankful for teachers and their patience with my babies. Bc no way.”
Some people agree that sniffing nutmeg isn’t new. One person writes, “Class of 2002 it was so popular in my school they had to do a PSA about how toxic nutmeg can be if you use too much.”
“Nutmeg was popular when I was like 12″ says a second “someone done talked to Gen X!”
“Gen X’er here – The Anarchist Cookbook of course,” a third jokes.
One netizen talks about her experience with a child who had nutmeg poisoning: “I took care of a kid years ago at the hospital for nutmeg intoxication. It was the first time I’d heard of it. Started in jails. But they have internet, so I’m sure that’s where they learned it.”
People have been using nutmeg as a drug for a long time, long before prisoners learned that it could make them hallucinate.
The Encyclopedia of Toxicology says that “nutmeg seeds were used in medicines as an aphrodisiac, abortifacient, and anti-flatulent, a narcotic, and as a means to induce [menstruation].”
Today, “uses of nutmeg seeds include treatment of hemorrhoids, chronic vomiting, rheumatism, cholera, psychosis, stomach cramps, nausea, and anxiety. Nutmeg seed oil also has antiseptic, analgesic, and antirheumatic properties.”

“You know why they’re all suspended?” asks the mother. “Because these flippin’ teenagers have figured out you can use nutmeg to get high.”
“Is nothing sacred anymore?” she asks.
