Is singing well a talent or a skill?
D.M.A. in Voice Performance, Voice Teacher, Vocal Coach, Professional Singer of Opera and Musical Theater, answer on Quora will give us a great overview:
“Talent in singing means having a good ear for imitation, an ability to concentrate, and a good acoustic sense. A natural ability to selectively isolate and mimic good tone, pitch, rhythm and the nuances of sound.
Some children’s natural talents are more refined, having grown up around parents or people who have played or performed music at a high level. But any natural talent is helpful when that child or grownup decides to understand what they’re actually doing or someone recognizes their talent, and they decide to be a student of music and voice”
He then continues:
“I believe that the only natural talent one has to have before learning how to skillfully sing though is a good sense of pitch. All the rest can be taught. Everyone has the same equipment in their throats. Yet, in the long run the more natural talent a singer has, the more advantage they have when competing at the highest level.”
Is Beau Dermott a talent?
Even though 12-year-old Beau Dermott looks sweet and innocent, the moment she began singing the audience was shocked!
Inside this adorable young girl there is a hidden voice so powerful that the entire room was speechless throughout the whole song “Defying Gravity” from the popular musical Wicked.
The audience felt betrayed by her looks, and the judges thoughts she was cute, but this voice was not expected! The moment she started singing, they were all waiting for the golden buzzer.
Her talent (yes, here’s your answer) at such a young age startled everyone, but beyond that, her performance was itself unique the way she added an extra touch to the song.
She lit up with animation and excitement, showing that singing is what she is most passionate about.
This is amazing!
