Woman Diagnosed With Terminal Cancer After Repeatedly Dismissed Heartburn Symptoms
After a British mother’s “heartburn” symptoms were discovered to be an aggressive form of cancer, doctors have informed her that she only had 12 months to live.
Last year, Leeds resident Georgia Gardiner started having stomach pains and feeling ill. She saw her local doctor, who recommended anti-acid reflux medication.
Georgia revealed that she lost almost three stone as a result of being unable to eat, but the 28-year-old’s problems only got worse over time.
“I was being sick quite a lot. I couldn’t keep food down and lost my appetite completely,” she recalled. “I could only eat small amounts. I love food, I’m a massive foodie. My body was just rejecting everything.”

“Then I was experiencing pains in my upper stomach. It was really intense, it was a sharp constant pain.”
Georgia saw her doctor and the local hospital’six to nine times’ in an attempt to find the cause of her symptoms, but was informed she had acid reflux and should keep taking her medicine.
It would take several months before doctors eventually referred her for an endoscopy, which proved she had gastric cancer.
Symptoms of the disease, which is often referred to as stomach cancer, include heartburn, indigestion, difficulty swallowing, and stomach pain.
According to the findings, Georgia had linitus plastica, a rare kind of adenocarcinoma that begins in the glands lining your organs and is an aggressive kind of gastric cancer. Her lymph nodes and other internal organs had also been affected by this.
The stage at which stomach cancer is discovered and whether or not it has spread to other organs determine the prognosis. Since Georgia’s cancer cannot be cured, all further treatments will focus on enhancing her quality of life. Additionally, doctors have given her a 12-month prognosis.
Revealing how her entire world ‘crumbled’ at the news, Georgia said, “After the first appointment, we were full of hope that they could just remove it. Then when they said it was incurable, I went into a complete shock state.”
“I didn’t speak or leave the house for three days, my whole world just crumbled around me.”
With the family now raising money to pay for future therapies and adventures, the mother is now committed to creating as many memories as she can with her two-year-old son Arlo.
Georgia is also encouraging people to challenge a diagnosis that they believe is incorrect.
“I get angry sometimes because I think if I’d been taken seriously and they’d caught it before it had spread, then maybe we could’ve done more to prevent it getting to the stage it’s at now,” she stated. “I never thought I would have cancer, I’m 28, I thought I was invincible.”
She added, “I’d say to other people, push for answers and don’t stop. If someone else had this type of cancer and they can catch it at an earlier stage by making doctors do the correct tests, then at least I know that I’ve helped somebody then.”
