Woman Cared For 4 Elderly Sisters, Not Knowing What She’s About To Get After They Die
When a poor nurse saw that her four elderly neighbors had no one else to turn to for home chores, she took it upon herself to take care of them. Following their passing, the nurse finds the neighbor’s will.
Cassandra Myers was a low-income nurse employed at a nearby medical facility. Despite the fact that American nurses typically make good salaries, Cassandra’s paycheck was primarily used to settle her late parents’ debts, leaving her with just enough money to survive.
In a peaceful neighborhood, Cassandra resided in the ancestral home. The four elderly siblings who lived next door were in their 80s.
Cassandra witnessed the siblings’ repeated struggles with daily tasks. As they grew older, their daily tasks included carrying their groceries, cleaning their home and yard, taking out the trash, and preparing meals for themselves.
Every time Cassandra returned from her hospital shifts, she offered to aid them, realizing that they needed assistance. This was much appreciated, and the four sisters truly enjoyed having Cassandra around.
“You are heaven sent, Cassandra,” Marie, the eldest of the sisters, once told her. “Will you at least allow us to pay you for your help?” she asked.
Cassandra shook her head. “Oh, no, Marie. I will not allow you to pay me! I do this because I care for you, not because I want any money in return. Really, don’t worry about it,” she replied.
Cassandra prepared their food and cleaned up afterward each day to assist them. She also provided them with one-on-one assistance, helping them get dressed and organizing their maintenance medications.
One day, while they were having dinner together, Cassandra asked them, “Why didn’t you ever go to a nursing home? Surely, they can take better care of you compared to me.”
Clara, another sister, said they did not trust nursing homes. “We wanted to spend the remainder of our lives together. If we were put in a nursing home, we wouldn’t be able to sleep in the same room, and we’ll have to deal with so many other people,” she explained.
“We would want to live out the remainder of our days in the company of true love and compassion. We can never be certain of the motives of others,” the youngest sister, Mindy, continued.
Cassandra nodded, understanding where the sisters were coming from. “Well,” she told them. “You don’t have to worry. As long as I am able, you can count on me for help,” she smiled. “That’s what neighbors are for!”
“You are the best neighbor anyone could ask for,” Lisa, the second-eldest sibling, told her, reaching out to touch her hand.
Whenever Cassandra returned from the hospital, she made it a point to see her siblings, no matter how exhausted she felt. After sharing a meal, she would see to all they required and then head back home to sleep.
Sadly, as time went on, the inevitable started to occur. The siblings died one after the other, leaving Cassandra to plan their funerals and deal with their grief.
After the last of the sisters passed away, she cleaned their home and went to the final burial, which only a lawyer posing as Attorney Abigail Smith attended.
“You must be Cassandra,” Abigail told her. “Thank you for taking care of the sisters all these years. I’ve heard so much about you.”
“Cassandra smiled at her, shed a tear. It was a pleasure to be among them. They’re all going to be sorely missed.”
The attorney disclosed that Cassandra needed to come into her office the same week to talk with her about anything. Cassandra was perplexed, but she agreed to go to the attorney’s office the next day.
When she got there, the lawyer handed her a document. “Lisa, Clara, Mindy, and Marie each had children. I know you’ve never met them because they didn’t bother attending any of the funerals, but they live in nearby states. When the sisters realized their kids didn’t care much about them, they decided to change their will,” she explained.
“They left everything up to you,” disclosed Attorney Abigail. “In the document, you will see everything you will inherit from them, including money, jewelry, and the house they lived in.”
Cassandra’s jaw dropped. She couldn’t believe that her neighbors had left their entire estate with her despite having children. “It can’t be! I don’t deserve all of these,” she said, shocked.
Abigail, the attorney, shrugged. “Yes, Cassandra, you do. To them, you were more of a daughter than their own kids. They believed you were the legitimate heir to their wealth,” she reassured her.
Cassandra was at a loss for what to believe. When she viewed the document, which declared unequivocally that she would inherit the money the four sisters left behind, she began to shake. Though she was unsure about what to do with the money, she soon realized that it was more than enough to settle her late parents’ outstanding bills.
The offspring of the four sisters began contacting Attorney Abigail for the will reading a few days after the meeting. They all intended to challenge the will in court when she disclosed that they were not parties to it.
Attorney Abigail, nevertheless, informed them that each child would get a letter from their mother through the mail before they could take that action. The message in every letter was the same:
“Dear child,”
I know you’re asking why I gave you nothing. You are aware of my deep love for you and my happiness that you were able to move to a new state and begin a new life without my presence. Though I had hoped you would take a break from your hectic schedule to come see me and spend the last of my days with me, I am proud of all your accomplishments.
You never gave me any thought after you moved, which really upset and insulted me. Every holiday, I had hoped you would visit, but you never did. I therefore made the decision to leave my fortune to someone who supported me during the years that you weren’t.
“I’m hoping you’ll respect and comprehend this choice. As you have been surviving without me for these years, I know you are capable of living without my estate. hugs, mom.”
On the same day, the letters were delivered to the kids. They decided to drop the lawsuit after exchanging messages in a group conversation. They came to understand how horrible they had been to their mothers and that they were unworthy of anything.
Cassandra never saw the sisters’ offspring, but she saw lovely new flowers on the graves of each of the women on the anniversary of their deaths. Cassandra grinned at this, knowing that the sisters’ kids had finally chosen to give their moms the attention they deserved.
What can we learn from this story?
Help others when you have the opportunity. Cassandra gave her old neighbors assistance without asking for anything in return. After learning that she loved them more than their own children, her neighbors eventually came to the conclusion that she was the legitimate successor to their estate.
Before it’s too late, spend time with the people you love. Their children discovered how much time they had wasted ignoring their mothers when the sisters passed away. Since it was too late to change the past, they were left to place flowers on their graves each year and lamented not being able to spend more time with them while they were still living.
