When I Found Out Why My Fiancée Wore A Black Dress To Our Wedding, My Life Completely Changed
Nathan was waiting impatiently at the altar for his fiancée, Jane, to walk down the aisle wearing the gorgeous white gown they had chosen together. When she finally showed up in a long black dress and explained why she hadn’t worn her bridal gown, he was appalled.
Though it was meant to be one of the happiest days of my life, my wedding day left a deep psychological scar. It never occurred to me that things would work out this way.
Jane and I became inseparable after a few dates, thanks to a mutual acquaintance who introduced us. I was the quiet, reclusive kind who shied away from gatherings, whereas she was the gregarious extrovert who was constantly surrounded by friends.
But things weren’t the same with her.
She gave me a love I never knew existed; therefore, I constantly wanted to be around her. She enjoyed having me around and never once gave me the impression that I wasn’t deserving of her love.
I made the proposal a few months into our relationship. Jane answered yes without hesitation, grinning at the ring I had chosen, and I knew she was the one.
I once told her, “I can’t believe you said yes.” “I don’t know how I got so lucky, Jane.”
To be honest, I didn’t think I deserved such a wonderful person as her.
Days became weeks, and before long, we made the decision to get married. Our connection grew even closer.
The meeting of our families went off without any problems. For the summer, we had a small ceremony set up in which we would exchange vows in front of our closest friends and family.
Though everything appeared ideal, destiny had different ideas.
I waited impatiently at the altar on our wedding day, dressed in a fitted black suit, expecting Jane to come down the aisle. I thought she would be wearing the stunning white dress we had selected together only a few weeks earlier.
However, she didn’t.
Rather, she showed up donning a long black gown and veil. The kind of thing you would wear to a funeral.
What was the reason behind her actions? I pondered. What had gone wrong with her?
Her eyes were blazing with anger as she came toward me. The visitors, in the in the meantime, were staring at her with wide open eyes.
I held her hands gently when she arrived at the altar and said, in a whisper, “Why are you wearing black? What is happening?”
“I’ll let you know after the ceremony,” she added, meeting my gaze directly. A blank face staring at me as if I had committed the greatest sin ever imagined—no expressions at all.
“Wait!” I raised my hand and declared.
The church ceased to exist.
Tell me. Why are you wearing black, please? Unaware that her next words would rock my world, I demanded, “Now.”
Jane said, “It’s all your mother’s fault.” “She told me everything.”
I questioned, “What do you mean?”
I saw tears well up in Jane’s eyes at that point.
“She told me about you and Lauren,” shook Jane’s voice. “Your best friend.”
“What? How did my mother describe Lauren?” Squinting my eyes, I asked. I had no idea what Jane was discussing.
Jane replied, “She said you’ve been cheating on me with Lauren,” to a collective gasp from the attendees. “You two were having an affair, she claimed, and you were going to leave me for her. Which is why I’m dressed in black. Nathan, to lament the love we once shared.”
What Jane had just said shocked me.
“Jane, this is not true,” I begged. “I promise that I never betrayed you. We’re just buddies, Lauren and me. My mother said something, and I’m not sure why.”
Desperate to find my mother, I searched the crowd, but she was nowhere to be found. I desired to confront her in order to expose her deceit.
“I don’t think you,” Jane firmly stated. “I know you’re lying because that’s what you’ve always done.”
I reached for Jane’s hand and pleaded, “Jane, please,” but she retreated. Mom wasn’t fond of you. She’s attempting to undermine us. Please, you must have faith in me.
“Ah, I see.” Jane shook her head, “But Nathan, it’s not just about the affair.” “I am aware of your mystery. You have been lying to me, I know that.”
I said, “What secret?”
Jane glanced around the cathedral and then met my gaze.
“You lied about your family’s finances,” she yelled. You married me to utilize my money to salvage your firm, but you concealed the fact that your family is bankrupt. Is that not the case?
Oh no, I thought to myself.
Although there was some truth to what Jane said, I had never wanted to divulge my secret in this way. Indeed, things weren’t going well in my family’s business, and we were on the verge of bankruptcy. Yes, I did believe that marrying Jane would be beneficial, but I wasn’t doing it for financial gain!
My love for her was the main factor in my decision to marry her. How on earth was I supposed to explain this to her?
“Listen, Jane,” I said. “Let me explain, I—”
“Explain what?” She interrupted me. “That in order to preserve the family business, your mother put pressure on you to meet a wealthy woman? She filled me in on everything. I simply cannot believe how foolish I was to fall in love with a man such as yourself.”
I had so much I wanted to say at that time. I wanted to say that I wasn’t lying, but I was speechless for some reason. I was at a loss for words.
Jane yelled, “It’s over, Nathan,” and stormed out of the chapel.
The visitors whispered to one another as she left. My pals hurried over in the meantime, but I couldn’t let her leave like that. I had to explain to her.
“Jane, wait!” I yelled as I chased after her. “Please, just listen to me.”
She turned around without even looking back, saying, “I don’t want to listen to your lies, Nathan.”
I blocked her route by walking and standing in front of her.
I argued, “I swear I’m not lying to you.” “I’m not sure why Mom told you all of this, but I believe it’s because she dislikes you. Mom wasn’t very pleased with our relationship, even though I never told you this.”
“And why should I believe you, Nathan?”
Lauren left the church before I could respond.
“Listen, Jane,” she commanded. “What your mother-in-law said may not be true, but there is nothing going on between the two of us. Nathan loves you very much, but he’s just a friend. Believe me.”
Jane first glanced at Lauren, then at me. She had doubts about her ability to trust us.
I took Jane’s hands and said, “Look, I would’ve never signed the prenup if I wanted to marry you for your money.” “I signed it to safeguard both your finances and your future. If I had my sights set on your money, I never would have done that.”
“But why did you hide your family’s financial situation?” she inquired. Or perhaps you’re concealing more? Why should I believe you?
I inhaled deeply and shook my head gently.
“Jane, you’re right. I should have told you about the circumstances in my family, but I was afraid you would abandon me.” I stopped, knowing that I had to tell her the rest. “There’s something else I’ve never told you.”
Jane waited for me to say something, folding her arms.
I said, “My mom hates me.” “She’s done so consistently. I participated in a DNA test in my college years ago. I discovered that my father was not the one I was born with. All of it collapsed when I addressed her. Dad took all of the money with him when he departed.”
I went on, “That’s why she lied to you.” She couldn’t stand to see me happy, so she sought to sabotage my wedding. I suppose she was just waiting for the proper opportunity to destroy our relationship while pretending to accept you. I apologize for withholding all of this from you. I felt ashamed.
I could tell at that point that Jane had lost her anger. She appeared to be really sorry for me based on the sympathetic expression on her face.
“You were embarrassed, so you didn’t tell me?” She enquired. “Nathan, it was our intention to start a new life together. But you had so much to hide from me. After everything, do you believe I can still trust you?”
As much as I hate to say it, I knew Jane was correct. I ought to have told her everything right away.
I looked down and said, “I’m sorry, Jane.” “I know I’ve made mistakes, but I love you.”
Glancing away, she said, “I’m sorry too, Nathan,” dabbing at her cheek. “I suppose this is the conclusion. We part ways in this way. Someone who maintains secrets is someone I can’t live with.”
And with that, the lady I loved the most, the love of my life, turned her back on me.
As I saw her get into her car and leave the chapel, tears were streaming down my face. Since I knew she was correct, I was powerless to stop her.
After that day, nothing has ever been the same in my life. I tried calling Jane a million times while confronting my mother and severing our relationship, but she never picked up.
Because of secrets I shouldn’t have kept, betrayal, and lies, I lost the love of my life.
