Off The Record
Val Kilmer’s Final Words Shared Online As Daughter Confirms Cause Of Death
Only a few weeks before he passed away, Val Kilmer posted his last message on Instagram.
The 65-year-old Top Gun and Batman Forever star passed away from pneumonia yesterday, April 1.
After receiving therapy for the illness and a tracheostomy that damaged the actor’s voice cords, Kilmer recovered from his 2014 throat cancer diagnosis.
Kilmer left the film industry to focus on his illness and started using art as a creative outlet.
Kilmer’s final film credit was in Top Gun: Maverick, a 2022 release in which he played the notorious Iceman once more.

A large portion of Kilmer’s Instagram page was dedicated to his passion of art, which became his primary artistic outlet in his last years.
His final post what was a photo of one of his paintings. Alongside the snap, Kilmer wrote: “It’s got that late-night glow. Cool tones with a low burn, like when the camp fire cools down but you’re still wide awake.”
Kilmer continued by describing the piece’s dimensions and pointing viewers to his website in case they wanted to buy it.
Only a few weeks prior to his death, on March 22, the post was shared.
On February 23, he was spotted with fellow artist, singer, and Beef actor David Choe in his most recent post featuring him.
Kilmer showed Choe in the first video included in the post before holding his phone up and donning a contemporary-looking Batman mask.
“It’s been a while,” the actor quipped to Choe before putting it on.
He went on to display some artwork of Batman. It is believed to have been created by Choe.
In a first-person blog post on his website, the late actor Kilmer gave an explanation of why he focused more on his work.
The piece, published April 2022, read: “My name is Val Kilmer. I’m an artist. I’ve lived a magical life.”
“For more than half a century, I have been honing my art, no matter the medium. Be it literature, movies, poetry, painting, music, or tracking exotic and beautiful wildlife in the most remote African bush, to capture ephemeral moments with a camera, I yearn to express my creative spirit.”
Kilmer said, “I was ‘not able to be out in the world the same way I had become accustomed’ because of the damage to his vocal cords from his cancer treatment.”
His ‘creative juices were boiling over’ with this in mind, and he began painting once more.
“I felt the art healing me,” Kilmer went on to write.
