Tragedy At High School Track Meet: 17-Year-Old Athlete Austin Metcalf Passes Away

When a kid was killed in a violent altercation during a typical high school track meet, the event took a tragic turn, leaving his father reeling from a loss no parent should have to face and seeking answers.

On Wednesday morning, April 2, 2025, Austin Metcalf, 17, was fatally stabbed at a high school track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Following allegations of a stabbing incident involving two students during a fight, police arrived on the site at approximately ten in the morning.

Austin, who was originally listed as 16 years old, suffered major injuries as a consequence of the assault, according to Frisco Police. Emergency staff tried administering blood and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to save lives. He passed away at the scene in spite of these efforts.

According to Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, the altercation started when the assailant was informed that he was in the wrong place. According to Jeff, his son had no acquaintance with the pupil who had stabbed him.

Hunter, his twin brother, saw what was happening and attempted to help him. “They were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother’s arms,” Jeff recalled.

The devastated father further stated that he rushed to the stadium after hearing the news. He saw his son on a gurney, unresponsive, and described the extent of the injuries. “They said he wasn’t breathing. I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was… we prayed, and it’s God’s plan, I don’t understand it, but they weren’t able to save him. This is murder.”

With a 4.0 GPA, Austin excelled academically and was the team MVP for his school’s football team. According to his father, he is a leader who intends to go to college. According to Jeff, “He was on the right track,” “Many people loved him. He was a leader.”

Jeff questioned the upbringing of the student who attacked his son. “I’m not trying to judge, but what kind of parents did this child have? What was he taught? He brought a knife to a track meet and he murdered my son by stabbing him in the heart.”

Despite the tragedy, Jeff expressed forgiveness. “You know what, I already forgive this person. Already. God takes care of things. God is going to take care of me. God is going to take care of my family.”

The suspect, who is also 17 years old, has been taken into custody and charged with murder, according to Frisco Police. The suspect’s bond was still pending as of Wednesday, and it’s yet unknown if he has legal counsel.

In an official statement, the Frisco Police Department said, “The Frisco Police Department grieves with all those affected by this devastating loss and extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family, students, and staff who are experiencing unimaginable pain.” The department added that it is working closely with the Frisco Independent School District to offer continued support.

After the event, the 11-5A championship district track meet—which included over 100 children from eight schools—was promptly canceled. All students were sent back to their universities, and the stadium was guarded. There were no other recorded injuries.

The precise location of the stabbing within the stadium has not been made public by the authorities. Officers were seen looking into a portion of the stands close to the track, though. The investigation is still ongoing, according to Frisco Police.

While the inquiry continues, the Metcalf family is receiving a significant amount of support. With more than 3,000 donations, Jeff’s GoFundMe campaign has raised almost $175,000 of the $140,000 target.

In the post, Jeff remembered his son as a determined and passionate young man, “He was a bright young man with a great future ahead of him. He was a leader of men. His smile would light up the room… His commitment, dedication, leadership, and sheer grit made him rise to the level of success that he desired.”

Jeff also noted that Austin’s twin, Hunter, played football beside him and that the family would always remember the way Austin impacted others’ lives. “I love you forever, son. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later. God will take care of us till we meet again. RIP. Love, Dad,” he wrote.

Hunter also spoke publicly about the moment he tried to save his brother’s life. “I tried to whip around as fast as I could,” he told WFAA, tearfully recalling the incident. “I looked at my brother and I’m not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him.”

He said he held Austin until first responders arrived and began resuscitation efforts. “It was really senseless,” Hunter added. “[Austin] did everything for our family. He was a strong man. He was a strong kid…”

As investigators attempt to understand the facts fully behind the tragedy, Austin Metcalf’s death has had a profound effect on his family, classmates, and school community.

near yet another tragic instance of young lives gone too soon, twin brothers’ remains were discovered by hikers near Hiawassee, Georgia, sparking a thorough investigation.

The Towns County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) received a report from hikers who had reached the summit of Bell Mountain on the morning of March 8, 2025. They found the bodies of two Lawrenceville brothers, Qaadir Malik Lewis and Naazir Rahim Lewis, both 19 years old, at around 11:05 a.m.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the crime was a murder-suicide, and authorities confirmed that both men had been shot. While authorities await the results of the autopsy, the inquiry is still ongoing.

Additionally, Scott Kerlin, a 42-year-old Hiawassee volunteer firefighter, was arrested by the GBI and accused of misdemeanor obstruction. Legal action was taken after investigators found that Kerlin had taken unlawful photos of the crime scene and disseminated them online.

On March 7, the brothers missed a flight to Boston and were reported missing. The complete circumstances surrounding their deaths are still being investigated by law enforcement.

Although the autopsies were performed by a medical examiner, the formal decision and findings are still pending additional forensic investigation, according to the GBI.

In order to pay for the twins’ funeral and memorial services, their family launched a GoFundMe campaign, and it has already raised over $30,000. Yasmine Brawner, their aunt, stated in the description that she couldn’t believe how they died.

She denied the murder-suicide theory as well. The 19-year-old boys planned to launch a clothing company and were close to their family. She exhorted everyone to support the cause and share their stories.

The rest of the family stands united, also rejecting the reported cause of the twins’ deaths. “They loved each other. They’re like inseparable, so I can’t imagine them hurting each other because I’ve never even seen them get into a fistfight before,” their uncle, Rahim Brawner, said.

Most of all, they are demanding a more comprehensive probe and answers. Given their lack of hiking experience and unfamiliarity with the Hiawassee and Bell Mountain terrain, the twins’ finding approximately 90 miles (ca. 145 km) distant caused significant shock as they were scheduled to spend the weekend in Boston visiting friends.

These behaviors, which were out of character considering the twins’ robust support network, led the family to conclude that something had happened in the mountains.

Meanwhile, Yasmine has also spoken out on social media, echoing the family’s doubts and the sentiments from the GoFundMe campaign. “Something happened in #BellMountainGA, and Black lives are being taken there. Justice for Qaadir and Naazir. #sundowntowns,” she wrote in a post.

As the investigation looks into what really occurred to Qaadir and Naazir, we send our sympathies to their families and friends during this trying time.
