When she died in Spain in August 2024, Maria Branyas Morera was 117 years old. In January 2023, she was crowned “the oldest person in the world” by the Guinness World Records.

Scientists have now claimed to have discovered the secret to longevity after examining Maria’s DNA. It appears that she led a longer life because of a number of extremely healthy practices.

Researchers at Barcelona University examined Maria’s DNA and microbiome, concluding that the 117-year-old had a “privileged genome” and the “microbiome of a child.”

Maria’s distinct genes reduce her biological age by about 17 years, according to Manel Esteller, a genetics expert at Barcelona University. Rosa Moret, Maria’s daughter, also mentioned her mother’s health when she was living, stating that her mother’s longevity was due to her never being sick.

According to reports, Maria had barely started to lose her hearing, memory, and vision when she passed away.

Maria also had ‘excellent’ blood sugar regulation, positive cholesterol, and a ‘fully’ regulated immune system, it was found. She never smoked or drank alcohol, and she ate three yoghurts a day as part of her Mediterranean diet. She frequently surrounded herself with relatives and other loved ones and loved taking walks. Researchers believe that all of these lifestyle choices have contributed to her long life.

Following their findings, the researchers believe that the information gleaned from Maria’s lifestyle choices may assist develop anti-aging medications and provide insight into the kinds of foods that can help you live a longer life.

According to the researchers, Branyas emphasizes that growing older need not be equated with illness. According to Spain’s EFE news agency, the genetic study’s findings “challenge the perception that [the two] are inexorably linked.”

On March 4, 1907, Maria was born in San Francisco after her parents immigrated to the US from Mexico and Spain. However, in the midst of World War One, she and her family moved back to Spain in 1915 and lived in Catalonia.

Inah Canabarro Lucas, a Brazilian nun who was born on June 8, 1908, is presently the oldest person in the world, standing at 116 years old, after her death.
