Queensland On High Alert After Potential Measles Outbreak Linked To Recent Traveller

After a measles patient visited multiple tourist destinations, a health notice was issued in Queensland.

While traveling about the area, the visitor, who had recently traveled from overseas to Australia, was afflicted with the illness.

“The case was unknowingly infectious as they travelled around Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast between Wednesday 2 April 2025, and Saturday 5 April 2025, visiting several businesses and locations,” Metro North Public Health Unit said.

Last week, the adult went to the Australia Zoo, a miniature golf course, a number of train stations, stores, and hostels.

On Wednesday, they went to a number of locations in Surfers Paradise, such as Cotton On, located at 27 Cahill Ave, between 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m., and Yo-chi, located at 11/3240 Surfers Paradise Blvd, between 10.15 a.m. and 11 a.m.

We also visited Holey Moley Mini Golf – Circle on Cavill, Surfers Paradise Blvd. between 2.15 and 3.45 p.m. and Ghanda Clothing, 25 Cahill Ave., between 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.

The visitor spent the entire Wednesday and Thursday at the Bunk Hostel, 6 Beach Rd Surfers Paradise, till 10am, then from 6.45pm to 8pm, they visited the restaurant Goldies, located at 3128 Surfers Paradise Blvd.

After that, they traveled to Brisbane, where they checked into the Bunk Hostel on Thursday until Friday at 7 a.m. at 21 Gipps St., Fortitude Valley.

The patient spent Thursday between 12 and 12:30 p.m. at Brooki Bakehouse, 15 Marshall Street, Fortitude Valley; 1.30 and 2 p.m. at Sushi Hub, 136 Queen Street; and 2.10 and 3.10 p.m. at Cotton On, Queen Adelaide Building 90/90 Queen Street.

On Friday, they got to Central Station Brisbane at about 6.45 a.m., and then they took the Nambour train to Beerwah Station, which left at 7.07 a.m. and arrived at 8.27 a.m.

Before taking the Springfield train from Beerwah Station to Central Station Brisbane, which left at 5.03pm and arrived at 6.26pm, the visitor spent the day at the Australia Zoo from 8.30am to 5pm.

The vacationer was discovered in the waiting area of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Emergency Department later on Friday between 7.45 and 11 p.m.

People are not continuously at risk from the aforementioned regions.

Dr. Alexandra Uren, a specialist in Metro North Public Health, advises anyone present at these sites to monitor for symptoms for eighteen days after possible contact.

“If they do develop symptoms, they should seek medical advice,” Dr Uren said.

“Early symptoms of measles include a fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose, and red, inflamed eyes. Those symptoms then progress to a blotchy red rash, which often starts on the face before becoming widespread.”

“Measles symptoms typically start between seven and 18 days after infection.”

Dr. Uren urges patients who think they may have the virus to phone their doctor in advance of seeing their general practitioner so that the doctor’s office can take preventative measures against the illness spreading to other people.
