Obama Addresses Divorce Speculation With Unexpected Comment

Barack Obama has shared a rare glimpse into his marriage to Michelle Obama and acknowledged that he’s still working on making up for lost time.

The 63-year-old former president discussed everything from Donald Trump’s massive tariffs to gun regulations during his appearance at Hamilton College in New York on Thursday, April 4. But when he openly discussed his friendship with the former First Lady, it was one of the most talked-about moments.

“I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” Obama said during a conversation with College President Steven Tepper. “So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.”

The Obamas have been wed since 1992 and served in the White House for eight years, during which time Barack has acknowledged that their marriage suffered.

The couple’s relationship has been the subject of internet rumors, with some speculating about conflict or divorce, which they have never confirmed.

Michelle Obama has also not held back when talking about the highs and lows of their relationship. She once mentioned in her podcast the one behavior of Barack’s that made her a little crazy: his carefree attitude toward time.

“Barack, you know, he had to adjust to what ‘on time’ was for me,” she said, poking fun at his Hawaiian roots. “Because he was on that island time.”

According to Michelle, her husband would frequently start getting dressed right before their scheduled departure time.

“You know, I’ve got this husband who’s like, when it’s time to leave—it’s 3—he’s getting up and going to the bathroom,” she said. “And I was like, dude, dude, a 3 o’clock departure means you’ve done all that… Don’t start looking for your glasses at 3!”

Michelle acknowledged that her husband has improved over the course of their thirty-year marriage, despite their early issues with punctuality. She also quipped that their children, Malia and Sasha, now know to arrive early if they are meeting with her.

However, Obama’s presidency also had its share of problems with timekeeping. According to a 2014 Washington Post article, he had accrued more than 35 hours of delays at public events.

It’s evident that the former president is concentrating on something even more intimate at home—avoiding the “deficit” with Michelle—even if he is presently drafting the second volume of his presidential memoirs.
