Large Hadron Collider Powers Up Again, Igniting ‘End Of World’ Conspiracy Theories
It’s almost time for a scientific device that many have dubbed a “death machine” to be activated once more. Elon Musk and others believe that the 17-mile-long experiment will spell the end of civilisation.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which was constructed between 1998 and 2008 by more than 10,000 scientists from almost 100 different nations, is a significant scientific accomplishment in the field of universe study.
Many believe that the LHC and other projects developed by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) are endangering humanity, even though experiments involving scientific extremes are frequently humorously overstated in their hazards.
The LHC, which consists of a 17-mile (27-kilometer) ring of magnets intended to increase the speed of particles travelling through its tubes, is essentially the most potent particle accelerator in the world.
Before they finally collide, particles in different pipelines move in opposite directions at a speed that nearly equals the speed of light, or around 186,000 miles per second. Scientists then watch the reaction that takes place, which usually entails the transformation of kinetic energy into new particles.

The most well-known product of the Large Hadron Collider, the Higgs boson, helped scientists understand the mass of other particles in the cosmos.
However, many have warned against the risks of the long gadget because of the LHC’s unheard-of power, which is understandably frightening. It can even produce “unstable” black holes, albeit these would be so tiny that they would only exist for a split second.
Elon Musk has previously expressed his opposition to CERN’s creation, posting a sarcastic image on X in 2022 that wrote: “Please let me use the CERN large hadron collider. I am normal and can be trusted with a demonic technology unlike anything the world has ever seen.”
CERN’s announcement in a press release titled ‘Particles are back in the accelerators’ that it will be restarting operations in the coming months won’t make him very happy.
“At the end of each year, the whole complex comes to a halt for the traditional ‘year-end technical stop’,” the statement details. This ‘YETS’ allows the team at CERN to perform maintenance, upgrades, and training on the LHC before opening it up again in a few months time.
“This year, the wheels were set back in motion on 19 February, when the first particle beam of 2025 circulated in Linac4. The second link in the chain, the PS Booster, received its first particles on 26 February, the PS on 4 March and, today, the SPS accelerated its first proton beams of the year,” wrote CERN on March 14.
Due of its size and importance, the LHS is the last to be resurrected, and the ‘titan’ is scheduled to be reawakened on April 4.
However, this is by no means the only exciting announcement from CERN. They have also announced intentions to accelerate and collide oxygen ions at the beginning of July this year. This will be the first time this has happened in the LHC, and as a result, we may witness some intriguing outcomes.
