LA Officers Describe City Streets As Battleground After Protesters Hurl Bombs And Set Fires
For the third day in a row, immigration protests turned into full-fledged street fighting in downtown Los Angeles, with police officers caught in the crossfire.
What started out as a protest against President Trump’s National Guard deployment and ICE raids has now escalated into something much more serious. Protesters targeted California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicles and apparently attempted to set them on fire as they flooded city streets and even took over the 101 Freeway on Sunday.
One of the most terrifying events was when protesters brandishing commercial-grade explosives threw them straight at LAPD police. According to LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, the fireworks “can kill you.”
“Tonight we had individuals out there shooting commercial-grade fireworks at our officers that can kill you,” McDonnell said.

The violence escalated
The scene had become so tense that a small fire even started behind an LAPD skirmish queue.
As the fighting intensified, officers rushed to keep things under control. Demonstrators were observed throwing objects, protecting themselves with whatever they could find, and in one terrifying case, throwing a Molotov cocktail. Someone else is charged with using a motorbike to crash into a police queue.
Ten LAPD officers and seventeen CHP officers had been arrested before dark, and more mayhem was anticipated.
“It’s escalated now since the beginning of this incident,” McDonnell warned. “It’s increasingly worse and more violent.”
“Disgusting”
The LAPD chief expressed his frustration at what he saw as intruders taking over nonviolent protests during a press conference.
“It was even more disgusting that many of the people who are doing this come in from other places just to hurt people and to cause havoc,” he said.
He repeated the word “disgusting,” according to ABC, in reference to the rock, firecracker, and Molotov cocktail attacks on police.
The decision to implement a curfew is currently being considered by city officials. The decision will be reevaluated as circumstances change, McDonnell said, adding that the issue was being explored with the L.A. County Sheriff.
Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, continued to verbally abuse President Trump while claiming that the White House was fuelling the fires in Southern California. In particular, Governor Gavin Newsom has been outspoken in his opposition of President Donald Trump’s plan to send 2,000 National Guard troops to California. This is a very rare step, since presidents usually don’t do this without the governor’s approval or request.
“That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions,” Newsom said on X Saturday. “This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust.”
After federal immigration authorities arrested at least 44 people on Friday, protests erupted throughout Los Angeles. President Trump’s current immigration crackdown, which has resulted in numerous raids and deportations across the country, includes the detentions.
