Kelly Clarkson Admits She Is ‘Not Above Spanking’ Her Children If They Are Out Of Line

Did you get spanked when you were a kid?

The American Academy of Pediatrics finds that spanking children to be an unproductive and damaging form of discipline and has issued a statement to that effect. Some parents continue to advocate for it.

Kelly Clarkson is one of those parents, and she defended her decision during a radio interview.

Kelly, mother to 8-year-old River Rose and 6-year-old Remy, has stated that she “is not above spanking” her children. “I don’t mean hitting her hard,” she said. As in, “I just mean a little spanking.”

She sees no flaw in it because it was part of her upbringing.

“My parents spanked me, I did fine in life and I feel fine about it.” Kelly, who grew up in Texas, said. “I’m from the South, y’all, so we get spankings. My mom would call the principal if I ever ended up in the principal’s office and give permission for her to spank me…I’m a well-rounded individual with a lot of character, so I think it’s fine.”

Clarkson has recently been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of her many accomplishments in the entertainment industry.

The American Idol judge has stated that she struggles to discipline her children in public because of the attention her parenting style receives.

“That’s a tricky thing, when you’re out in public, because then people are like–they think that’s wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with a spanking,” she said. “I do believe in spanking, so you might catch me spanking my child at the zoo.”

However, she stresses the need of forewarning her kids.

“I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m going to spank you on your bottom if you don’t stop right now, this is ridiculous,’ and honestly it’s really helped. She doesn’t do that kind of stuff as often.”

Is Kelly Clarkson’s approach to child discipline acceptable to you? Or do you believe parents should be free to raise their children anyway they see fit?
