I’ve Been A Doctor For Over 10 Years, But I Have Never Seen Anything Like This

The nurse gave my twins a final examination before we were released from the hospital. However, upon her return, my heart momentarily ceased. She returned with two baby girls instead of the boy and girl I had given birth to.

For a long time, Ross and I had been attempting to create a family. When we found out we were having twins—a boy and a girl—we were ecstatic. However, confusion arose immediately following their initial examination when our nurse, Savannah, handed us two daughters instead. My heart fell.

“My son is nowhere to be found. What did you do to him specifically? And who is this other girl’s baby? Unable to conceal my surprise and terror,” I demanded.

“They are your daughters, ma’am,” she said, continuing to stare at the papers in her hand. “I double-checked the reports and I’m confident there is no error.”

“Have you lost your mind?” My voice was piercing with incredulity. “All of the findings serve as evidence that I was meant to give birth to a daughter and a boy. After the delivery, I personally saw them. They can’t possibly be both girls.”

When Savannah looked up from her reports, she appeared frightened. But before I could ask her any more questions, Dr. Carter came in. “Please don’t say anything, ma’am. In an attempt to reassure me,” she remarked, “This is a hospital, and there are other patients.”

“Silence? Really?” Outraged, I asked. “Your nurse tells me she’s not wrong after bringing me a random youngster! Is that the way the administration of your hospital works? Must I get in touch with the chief physician and let him know what’s going on?”

At last, Ross raised his voice. “Doctor, I concur with my wife.” “We do not wish to cause a commotion,” he stated. “However, your nurse is telling lies. We’ll have to call the police if we don’t get our boy back, but we don’t know why she’s acting that way.”

The doctor added, “Please, sir, calm down,” in a comforting tone. “There must be a simple miscommunication. For a number of years, Savannah has been employed here. Perhaps she brought the wrong paperwork. Could I look at the documents, Savannah?”

Savannah paused, though, saying, “Ma’am, there’s no need… I mean, I looked it over, and they’re all right.”

Choosing to verify the reports personally, Dr. Carter shook her head and picked up the papers. She finally acknowledged that she had made a mistake.

The woman licked her lips and murmured, “Please give me a minute, ma’am,” “I think Savannah brought the wrong documents. Mrs. Matthews was the name of another patient. She also goes by Lucy as her first name. It must have puzzled Savannah.”

“I’m glad you noticed your mistake,” I remarked quietly. “I would recommend that you hire responsible people as staff next time!”

In order to make amends, Dr. Carter urged Savannah to follow her after apologizing once more. Tears filled the nurse’s eyes as she departed. I decided to accompany them silently, sensing that the doctor’s explanation was not entirely accurate.

They went inside Dr. Carter’s office, and I witnessed it. The nurse was probably crying when I heard it. I listened while sitting outside because the door was slightly open.

“What were you thinking, Savannah?” “What?” asked Dr. Carter sharply. At 10:30 a.m. today, Mrs. Matthews gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. That was even stated in the reports. You’re lying to them, but why? “Be truthful!”

I heard Savannah add, “I didn’t have a choice,” in between sniffles. “My sister is the owner of the other newborn girl. She didn’t make it through the delivery, and her husband abandoned her when he learned she was expecting. Although my spouse would not have agreed, I could have adopted her.”

“Why not place her for adoption?” Dr. Carter advised. “She’d be well cared for.”

The nurse went on to say, “My sister’s final wish was for her daughter to grow up in a loving family.” “I thought Mrs. Matthews and her husband would be ideal when I saw them together this morning. With the intention of placing their son for adoption, I exchanged him for my niece.

With a hard “That’s a crime, Savannah,” Dr. Carter answered. “This cannot be tolerated. Return Mrs. Matthews’ son right away. Additionally, keep this information private. Let me see if I can be of any assistance.”

My heart fell when I heard this, yet somehow, I wasn’t upset. I had a great deal of empathy. Now, a small girl was all alone and would enter the system before perhaps being adopted.

Savannah had been frantic to grant her sister’s desire, and even if her methods were terrible, she hadn’t meant any damage. As I went back to my room, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the child.

Dr. Carter apologized for the confusion and returned with my baby son shortly after. I chose not to file a complaint after learning the whole story. But I couldn’t get the picture of the helpless kid out of my head that night.

I said, “I can’t stop thinking about her, Ross,” the following morning. “I had a dream that she was content and at peace with us. I can’t get rid of this feeling, even if it may sound strange.”

Ross attempted to comfort me by saying, “It’s the shock from yesterday.” “And the hormones. You just had a baby. Why don’t we ask your mother for assistance?”

“No,” I demanded. “The idea of abandoning her in this world is too much for me to handle. I’d like to adopt her.”

Ross objected, saying, “But we already have two children.” “It’s a lot to add another. We must give this some thought.”

“I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I’ve decided on it. Would it be possible for us to begin the adoption process at the hospital today?” I begged.

Ross reluctantly agreed to help me. As soon as he hugged her, his hesitation vanished; her naive eyes warmed his heart.

Telling the doctor, “We’re thrilled to adopt her,” “Now that she’s in our lives, we can’t let her go because we’ve yearned for kids. Tell us when we may bring her home, please.”

Adopting her seemed appropriate, even though it took some time, especially after we chose to call her Amelia. Our family felt complete after we brought her home, and we began parenting all of our children as triplets.

Savannah became a great friend and was appreciative of our choice. She frequently came to visit Amelia and the twins, Sia and Mark.
