Horror As Dog Shoots His Owner On A Hunting Trip
In October 2015, Allie Carter was hunting ducks at a wildlife area in Indiana when a horrible turn of events changed her life forever.
Trigger, the 25-year-old’s chocolate Labrador puppy, tripped on her own shotgun and set it off, shooting her in the foot.
Carter lived, but before being released, she needed to receive treatment at two hospitals for injuries to her foot and toes.
Within hours, the tale went viral, becoming just one in a startlingly long string of tragic incidents involving firearms and man’s “best friend.”
Pet owners have occasionally lost limbs in negligent mishaps. In other cases, pets have tragically shot their owners dead.
These are a few of the regrettable incidents that involve dogs and firearms, ranging from hunting blunders to kitchen nightmares.

Canine kills owner on a hunting trip
After his pet stepped on the trigger, a Turkish parent was shot and killed by his dog.
In November 2022, 32-year-old Ozgur Gevrekogulu was slain after a hunting excursion in the Samsun district of Turkey.
According to the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet, Mr. Gevrekogulu was placing equipment into the car’s boot when his dog leaped on a friend’s back and stepped on a shotgun’s trigger, hitting him in the stomach.
Before paramedics could reach the site, he passed away from the wound caused by the bullet.
Unfortunately, he had only been a father for two weeks.
The hunting firm owned by Mr. Gevrekogulu was arrested at the scene of the shooting and later released.
Russian man shot by dog from the back of his car
In a bizarre mishap, a Russian man was shot and killed by his dog when he was attempting to remove the animal from his vehicle.
In January 2018, 64-year-old Sergei Terekhov and his brother had gone hunting in the isolated Saratov area of Russia.
One of Mr. Terekhov’s two Estonian dogs leaped on him as he was letting them out of his car, setting off the shotgun that was leaning on his knee and aimed at him.
His brother hurried to take him to the hospital after he was shot in the stomach, but Mr. Terekohov passed away en route.
Investigator Alexander Galanin stated at the time, “A fairly experienced hunter died.”
“He was sober and had a gun licence. Everything was in order. It was an accident.”
Pit bull shoots owner after jumping on bed
In Tennessee, a man was shot by his pet dog after it unintentionally fired off his rifle when it leaped on the bed to wake him up.
The strange event happened early on the morning of March 10 as he was sleeping in bed with his girlfriend and a gun next to them.
The pair got into a panic and called for assistance when the gun went off. The victim claimed that his girlfriend had taken the weapon and fled when the cops arrived.
He was taken to a local hospital after emergency personnel cleansed his injuries.
Fortunately, the bullet only slightly damaged the man’s upper thigh, causing non-critical injuries.
The man’s girlfriend told local reporters about what transpired, but the couple declined to reveal their identity.
“The dog is a playful dog, and he likes to jump around and stuff like that, and it just went off,” she said.
She told the outlet that she was startled when the gunshots woke her up because she had been asleep when the pit bull leaped on the bed.
The woman remembered the startling moment she woke up to the pit bull unintentionally shooting at her partner after hearing gunshots.
The pair claimed they could chuckle about the incident because no one was gravely hurt, and the victim’s dog, Oreo, survived it unharmed.
Rottweiler-mix leaves man with ‘gaping hole’ in his ribs
A man’s pet Rottweiler-mix got his paw caught in the trigger of his gun, leaving him with a “gaping hole” in his ribs.
In November 2018, Tex Harold Gilligan was traveling to the New Mexico desert to hunt jackrabbits with his three dogs.
However, Charlie, Mr. Gilligan’s pet dog, shot him before he reached his destination.
Charlie, a 120-pound Rottweiler mix, was seated in the front seat when Mr. Gilligan unintentionally set off his revolver after his paw became lodged in the trigger.
Speaking to ABC News at the time, Mr Gilligan said, “It went through my ribs my lung and busted up my collarbone on the right side.”
“I had a gaping hole, you know, and a lot of blood there too.”
Shortly after making a 911 call, he was transported to the hospital.
Mr. Gilligan was in severe condition, suffering from a punctured lung and three fractured ribs, but his primary worry was for his beloved cats’ well-being.
After the shooting, the three dogs were brought to a county shelter, but Gilligan requested that his puppies be released from “doggy jail” as soon as possible.
Mr. Gilligan initially claimed to have accidentally shot himself to defend his darling Charlie, but he eventually acknowledged that Charlie was the real culprit.
“[Charlie] did not mean to do it.”
He said, “He’s a good dog.”
Hunter found dead after pet stood on rifle
In January 2023, Wichita resident Joseph Smith was discovered dead close to the isolated hamlet of Geuda Springs.
The 30-year-old was discovered by authorities with his rifle and hunting equipment in the passenger seat of his truck.
They said there was a dog in the back of the automobile.
According to the sheriff’s office, teams responded to a report within minutes and began doing life-saving CPR.
However, Smith tragically passed away from his wounds quite quickly.
The unexpected death of the plumber during a weekend hunting trip in a rural area with a population of 194 garnered national attention.
However, what really stunned the authorities was the conclusion they came to.
According to them, Joseph Austin Smith was shot and murdered by a single round from his own gun when his dog stepped on it and set it off.
Man forgives dog for blasting off his hand
A Frenchman’s handgun was triggered when his pet dog leaped up at him, blowing off a portion of his right hand.
In September 2012, the victim, Rene, was shot in the Dordogne while hunting deer.
According to Rene, who spoke to the French news magazine Le Point, the youngest of the hunting dogs remained with his owner while the other two went out ahead.
He said: “He jumped on me to give me a cuddle, I think.”
“As he jumped, he put a paw on the gun.”
He had to have the hand amputated after being transported by air ambulance to a hospital in Bordeaux.
Rene did not blame his pet dog for the shooting’s gory conclusion, claiming that he was at fault for failing to use safety precautions.
“It wasn’t the dog’s fault – and he’s adorable!” he said.
Man shot by his pet after the dog ‘stepped on a rifle’s trigger’
In Russia, a dog stepped on a rifle’s trigger and shot its owner.
In November 2015, while hunting in the Perm region of Russia, the unnamed man was shot by his dog, Karat.
Along with three other men, he was having a break from hunting when the dog leaped on the rifle on the ground, killing the hunter.
According to the Moscow Times, an independent Russian media outlet, the rifle’s owner might have been charged with causing death by negligence if it was discovered that the safety regulations for handling firearms had been broken.
The man’s widow, however, claimed she didn’t want anyone to be prosecuted and seemed to place the blame on the dog, whom she wouldn’t allow back into her house.
It’s not only man’s best friend who have shot their owners
Apart from shootings involving dogs, there have also been cases when other animals or pets have shot people.
In 1934, a monkey shot Sydney resident Charles Alfred Broomhead in the back as he was participating in a circus act.
Tarzan, the ape, was using a gun to shoot a balloon as part of a stunt.
Tarzan shot too wide and struck Mr. Broomhead, who was outside the ring, rather than popping the balloon.
After being taken to the hospital, he received treatment for his gunshot wound.
Another incident was a man who was shot by his beloved cat after the animal knocked his gun off the kitchen counter and set it off.
In March 2005, Joseph Stanton was shot by his cart as he was in the kitchen of his Iron County, Utah, home.
After being taken to the hospital, Mr. Stanton received treatment for his gunshot wounds.
