The tragic tale of Austin Metcalf, a cherished 17-year-old student-athlete from Frisco ISD, has shocked his Texas town and beyond.

His distraught mother is now speaking out after Austin was fatally stabbed in the heart during a track competition last week.

Austin Metcalf’s distraught mother struggled to contain her tears as she described the heartbreaking moment her surviving son witnessed his identical twin pass away in his arms during an interview with Fox News.

”My son is gone, and I don’t really have words,” Meghan Metcalf shared on The Will Cain Show and added:

”He’s just going to be so missed by mostly our family, but this whole community has really wrapped their arms around us. If I could say anything to the nation, I would say to make sure that you just hug your babies tight, because you don’t know when [is] the last time you get to do it.”

According to Austin’s mother, she finds it difficult to understand how a fit of rage could turn into such a terrible catastrophe.

“Just because the kid was mad – my son is not here anymore and I don’t understand it,” she said.

Had big dreams

Austin was a rising talent with a bright future who was more than simply a football player. He was already being observed by college scouts, and he had lofty goals of developing his skills further. His days were spent practicing, leading his team, and encouraging those around him.

The relationship Austin had with his identical twin brother is what makes this story even more heartbreaking. They couldn’t be separated. Together, they participated in sports, school, and life. Without him, his brother must now face the world.

Austin’s twin was present when he passed away. He witnessed everything. He even held his brother’s wound and remained by his side until paramedics arrived in an attempt to halt the bleeding.

”I whipped my head around, and then all of a sudden I see him running down the bleachers just grabbing his chest… I put my hand on there, tried to make it [the bleeding] stop, and I grabbed his head and I looked in his eyes. I just saw his soul leave, and it took my soul, too,” Hunter said.

As he described the heartbreaking moment he attempted to save his twin brother Austin’s life, Hunter Metcalf fought back tears. The 17-year-old twins, who were both juniors at Memorial High School, which is located outside of Dallas, were at a meet at David Kuykendall Stadium on the morning of April 2. Austin was getting ready to participate. He was a talented shot-put and discus athlete and a brilliant football MVP.

“We did everything together. You name anything in the world, it’s always us two. We were always basically one person,” Hunter said in an emotional interview with WFAA.

The confrontation escalated quickly

An unplanned altercation started when a different student—later identified as Anthony Karmel from Centennial High School—sat down underneath their tent while they were waiting in the area set aside for tents it their school.

“This kid was sitting under our tent at track, we asked him to move. He started getting aggressive and talking reckless and my brother stepped in and said, ‘you need to move,’” Hunter explained. “And he’s like, ‘Make me move.’”

A witness said the confrontation escalated quickly. Anthony reportedly replied, “Touch me and see what happens,” before pulling a black knife from his backpack and stabbing Austin in the chest. He then fled the scene.

“I tried to help him,” Hunter said, recalling how he attempted to stop the bleeding before emergency responders arrived.

Anthony, who allegedly admitted to the stabbing but insisted it was in self-defense, was later taken into custody by the police. He faces a first-degree murder charge.

“I am so angry at that boy”

The Metcalf family was crushed and the Frisco neighborhood was stunned by the news.

Austin’s mother, Meghan, overwhelmed with emotion, said through tears, “I am so angry at that boy. It’s just not fair.”

Last week, hundreds of people came to the family’s church to celebrate Austin’s life and legacy.

“Seventeen years, my best friend, just there in the blink of an eye, I lost him,” Hunter shared. “So I’m not at that point to forgive and forget, but eventually I will.”

Hunter treated the suspect’s loved ones with extraordinary kindness in spite of his sadness.

“I just pray for [the suspect’s] family,” he added. “I pray that they understand what we’re going through as well.”

The state has seen a surge of support from strangers, parents, coaches, and other students as a result of this tragedy. There are memorials. Tributes are all over social media. Stronger safeguards for school gatherings are being demanded. Above all, they are supporting a young man who should have had his entire future ahead of him and a family who recently lost their son.

The story of Austin Metcalf serves as a reminder of how fleeting life can be and how a single act of violence has the power to destroy a whole community. May everyone he touched carry his legacy with them forever.
