Flight Chaos As First Officer Collapses And Plane Soars With No Pilot For Terrifying Minutes

The inquiry into an aircraft that was pilotless for about ten minutes has been made public, exposing the fate of the first officer.

An Airbus A321 carrying more than 200 passengers departed Frankfurt, Germany in February 2024 on a Lufthansa flight headed for Seville, Spain.

However, the aircraft had to be diverted to Madrid, Spain, with about 30 minutes of the flight remaining, following 10 minutes of the flight being flown without a first officer pilot.

The final report on the incident was released by Spanish investigators on Thursday, May 15.

According to Business Insider, with about half an hour of the trip left, the captain of the aircraft got up from the flight station to use the loo.

He informed authorities during his interrogation about the incident that the plane’s first officer appeared to be unharmed as he exited the cockpit.

But the captain apparently lost access to the cockpit when he returned eight minutes later.

The first officer was called via the flight attendant’s intercom, and numerous efforts to enter the access code for the security door were unsuccessful. Additionally, the captain found that the timer for the emergency access code had expired when he attempted to use it.

After ten minutes, the plane finally took off without anyone controlling it.

However, what had become to the initial officer?

Authorities were informed by the first officer, who is unnamed but is said to be a 38-year-old man, that he abruptly lost consciousness.

When the captain saw him, he was ‘pale, sweating and moving weirdly’, but fortunately he woke up enough to stand up and unlock the door.

While the first officer was being treated to by cabin staff and a passenger who claimed to be a doctor, the captain promptly called for the plane to be diverted to Madrid.

After the plane landed, the first officer was taken to the hospital immediately. It was determined that he had a neurological condition, specifically a seizure problem, which was the reason of his “sudden and severe incapacitation.”

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency has been urged to review safety procedures in light of the inquiry, according to The Economic Times.
