FDA Issues Urgent Blueberry Recall After Deadly Bacteria Detected
An urgent recall has been issued for blueberries that pose a potentially fatal health danger.
Given the risk of disease and even death from consuming tainted blueberries, a recent recall has been elevated to the highest degree imaginable.
The Independent said that 400 boxes of 30-pound blueberries that were supplied to a single customer in North Carolina were the subject of the recall, which was issued by Alma Pak International LLC.
Whether the client was a shop, restaurant, or other establishment has not been disclosed.
After the organic blueberries tested positive for listeria monocytogenes, they were recalled on June 9.
Often called listeria, it can cause severe illness if swallowed.

The FDA has recently raised the June 9 warning to a Class I, the highest degree of danger, claiming that the bacteria was discovered during routine testing.
“A situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death” is how the FDA defines a Class I recall.
The lot numbers for the impacted product are 13325 G1060 and 13325 G 1096.
Listeria is a “bacteria that can contaminate many foods,” according to the CDC.
An invasive sickness and intestinal ailment could result from consuming food tainted with the bacteria.
Which foods can cause listeriosis?
In the UK, listeriosis is the primary disease brought on by the listeria bacteria, according to the NHS.
According to them, the goods with the highest risk include
- cold, cooked sliced meats and cured meats
- smoked and cured fish – including in sushi
- cooked shellfish
- soft mould-ripened cheeses (such as camembert and brie) and blue-veined cheeses
- pâté
- pre-prepared sandwiches and salads
- pre-cut fruit (such as pre-packed melon slices)
- unpasteurised milk
- dairy products made from unpasteurised milk
Infections brought on by the listeria bacteria are the third most common food-related cause of death in the US, according to the CDC.
Infections brought on by the bacteria claim the lives of about 260 individuals annually.
What are the symptoms of listeriosis?
The NHS states that the majority of persons with listeriosis either have no symptoms at all or only have minor ones for a few days, like:
- a high temperature
- aches and pains
- chills
- feeling or being sick
- diarrhea
Pregnant women and individuals with weakened immune systems may experience greater symptoms, but most people recover from the sickness quickly and without any significant consequences.
How common is illness or death from foodborne bacteria?
A Public Interest Research Group estimates that over 1,400 illnesses were caused by the approximately 300 recalls that were made last year alone.
Approximately 487 of the 1,400 diseases resulted in hospitalisation, and 19 people sadly lost their lives.
Since 2023, the number of foodborne illness-related hospitalisations and fatalities has doubled.
FreshRealm’s chicken fettuccine alfredo products were recalled just last month after officials reported that a listeria epidemic had resulted in 17 illnesses, three fatalities, and one foetal loss.
They might be ‘adulterated’ with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
In 2022, deli meats and cheeses were implicated in a serious listeria outbreak that affected 16 persons in six states.
