Dutch Queen Máxima’s Mimicry Of Trump At NATO Summit Sparks Viral Reactions
At this year’s NATO summit in the Netherlands, President Donald Trump may have been treated like royalty, but Queen Maxima’s on-camera moment is what everyone is talking about.
The now-viral clip
Positive comments have been made about Donald Trump’s travel to the Netherlands for the yearly NATO meeting. Trump sounded reflective during a news conference on Wednesday, saying he was inspired by other NATO nations taking the initiative to boost their own defence budgets.
Trump had flown in from Washington and spent the night at a royal residence in the Netherlands prior to the press conference.
Even though Trump was beaming and giving his trademark thumbs up when he posed for press pictures with Queen Maxima and King Willem-Alexander, it was the Queen’s understated gesture that went viral. And it was either brutal, funny, or downright disrespectful, depending on who you ask.

”It was great, the house is…”
The trio can be seen standing next to each other at the Huis ten Bosch Palace in the now-viral video. Trump and the King joke about a little:
”That’s the picture we want,” Trump said.
”Well I hope you slept well!”, replied the King.
”It was great, the house is…” Trump began before turning back to the cameras with a grin.
“Thank you!” he added, making a kind gesture towards everyone in the room.
However, Queen Maxima, who had been silent until that point, appeared to imitate Trump’s mouth movements as he was finishing his remark.
A ”royal burn”?
She then turned and stared straight into the camera, a la The Office, in what many people online are referring to as a “royal burn,” as though to ask, “Did you catch that?”
The incident sparked a wave of online responses.
“Queen Maxima mimicking Trump’s mouth movements really got me,” one person tweeted.
“Poor lady just got herself an entire Truth Social post,” joked another.
“WAIT A MINUTE WAS QUEEN MAXIMA OF THE NETHERLANDS MIMICKING DONALD TRUMP?” a third user exclaimed.
Another gave her admiration by saying:
“I’ve never been a fan of our stiff monarchy, but Queen Maxima rocks it! Treat him like a baby.”
It wasn’t funny to everyone, though.
”What an unprofessional & b*tchy thing to do, not only for a woman of her age & position, but for a royal,” one angry commenter wrote.
”I hope this gets back to President Trump (which it will, everything always does) & he acts upon it! What an ahole of a thing to do in front of the whole world.”
Body language expert weighs in
As the internet argued over whether her motion was deliberate or the result of poor timing, body language expert Darren Stanton offered his opinion:
”The photo of Trump, the King, and Queen Maxima shows the Queen to be the more dominant of the two Dutch royals,” Stanton tells Unilad.
”The King can be seen looking ahead with the same self-soothing gesture, covering his abdomen, but the Queen is turned directly to Trump and mirroring his gestures — almost trying to assert her own dominance.”
As previously stated, Trump was in the Netherlands for crucial NATO talks and even celebrated his role in mediating an agreement between Iran and Israel to end airstrikes after more than ten days. According to reports, he used Qatari intermediaries to coordinate with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.
None of these, however, was sufficient to deflect attention from Maxima’s delicate shade.
