After Gunshots Were Fired “In His Vicinity,” Donald Trump Was Declared “Safe”
Donald Trump’s team has stated that he is “safe” after gunshots were heard “in his vicinity.”
According to The New York Times, the 78-year-old was shot while allegedly playing golf at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.
Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, released the following statement: “President Trump is safe following gunfire in his area. Not available at this time.”
CNN continues, “Sources say that shortly after, the Gold Club was locked down.”
The former president of the United States was present when gunshots occurred “on the grounds” of the golf club, according to Teri Barbera, a spokesperson for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Barbera reported that a “person of interest” had been taken into custody and that a “long gun”—a type of firearm—had been found at the scene, according to the NY Times.
“The intent right now is unknown,” Barbera continued.
However, CNN is reporting a conflicting story at this time, with the news outlet stating the following: “Officials believe an armed individual intended to target former President Donald Trump at Trump International Golf Club, according to sources briefed on the matter.”
Authorities have not publicly affirmed CNN’s reporting as of this writing.
Additionally, the US Secret Service has tweeted a brief update on the alarming incident, writing on X: “The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m.”
“The former president is safe. [The Palm Beach County Sheriff] will have more details soon.”
According to a Facebook post made by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday afternoon, authorities “stopped a vehicle” and have since “taken a suspect into custody believed to be connected to a shooting incident at Trump International in Palm Beach County.”
(Martin County is just north of Palm Beach County.)
A statement from the White House following the incident reads: “The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team.”
Additionally, Trump’s rival in the upcoming Presidential Election, Kamala Harris, has taken to social media to share the following statement: “I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”
At the time of the incident, neither Vice President Harris nor President Biden were attending any public engagements in Washington, D.C.
Naturally, this information was released little over two months after Trump was the target of an attempted murder on July 13 during a rally in Pennsylvania.
During that incident, Trump disclosed that he had right ear damage.
