Donald Trump gave reporters a glimpse into his family life during a press conference that was supposed to focus on international diplomacy.
The president abruptly changed the subject from foreign issues to his wife, Melania Trump, while making a joint presentation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
From peace talks to family talk
There was a lot of anticipation for Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s August 18 visit to the White House. Given how things went the last time, there was a lot of conjecture surrounding it after Donald Trump’s summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
However, the second round in the White House proceeded much more smoothly. Zelenskyy showed up with a military canvas army jacket with four patch pockets, in the French manner. Initially, the focus of the conversation was Ukraine’s peace initiatives. However, Melania wrote an emotional letter to Russian leaders pleading for an end to the suffering of children caught in the war, which Trump brought up to surprise the audience.
According to Trump, his wife has been deeply shaken by the images of young lives lost to violence. “She loves her son. She loves children. And she hates to see something like this happening. And that goes for other wars, too. I mean, she sees the heartbreak, the parents, the funerals that you see on television. Always funerals. We want to see something other than funerals,” he told reporters.
Then came the line that had the room laughing: “She’s got a great love of children, she has a wonderful son that she loves probably more than anybody, including me, I hate to say it.”
In addition to revealing Melania’s priorities, the rare and unguarded moment also revealed the dynamics within the Trump home.
A mother first
During Trump’s second term, Melania maintained a reduced public presence, preferring to concentrate on her family rather than the social scene in Washington.
Her friends and family frequently remind her that, despite being in the public eye, her top goal has always been her 19-year-old son, Barron, and ensuring he leads a normal life.

Balancing public duty and private faith
Melania rarely discusses her faith in public and practices it in private, according to people close to her. Nevertheless, she found great purpose in going to the pope’s funeral.
