Detectives Confirm DNA Test Results On Woman Claiming To Be Madeleine McCann

Investigators have verified that a Polish lady claiming to be Madeleine McCann’s DNA test “conclusively” demonstrates that she is not the missing girl from 2007. According to Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell, Julia Wandelt, 24, had a DNA sample collected at the time of her arrest and it was compared to Madeleine’s.

He continued: “A comparison took place and it conclusively proved that Julia Wandelt is not Madeleine McCann.” Wandelt is charged with stalking Kate and Gerry, Madeleine’s parents, from June 2022 to February 2025. She allegedly demanded a DNA test by calling them repeatedly, sending them letters and messages posing as Madeleine, and visiting their home.

It was described by prosecutors as a “well-planned campaign of harassment” including 61-year-old “supporter and confidante” Karen Spragg.

Prosecutors stated that Spragg, who is also on trial, “adopted and evolved” the fraudulent assertions “with gusto” starting in 2024. All charges are denied by her and Wandelt.

According to Mr. Cranwell, Wandelt had “reached the threshold for harassment” by the beginning of the year.

At first, he wasn’t sure if he should perform a DNA test because it’s against protocol, but he decided to conduct one because he thought it was “the right thing to do”.

The Detective Chief Inspector added: “It weighed heavily on my mind because this was against policy and procedure … There was a possibility she would never accept she isn’t Madeleine even when provided with scientific proof.”

Mr Cranwell said the “driving force” behind his actions was to “get the results to prove that she isn’t Madeleine and inform her of that decision in the hope she may stop her behaviour towards the McCann family”.

He continued: “I was weighing up the best time to take the DNA, I was aware Leicestershire [police] were likely to be arresting her at some point and I made the decision the DNA would be taken on her arrest.”

He went on to say that based on his own evaluation, Wandelt was not Madeleine because she was two years older than the missing kid, had different-colored irises, and had eye pigment in a different location.
