Couple Who Lost Opposite Arms While Clinging To Each Other In Tornado Reunite In Hospital
Two weeks have passed since Paul and Gail Cline’s lives were irrevocably altered.
America is in love with the 60-year-old couple who lost an arm each while clinging to each other during a deadly tornado in Kentucky.
There is now a significant update.
Their home collapsed
On May 16, a strong EF-4 tornado with maximum sustained winds of 170 mph tore a 55.6-mile swath through the Kentucky counties of Russell, Pulaski, and Laurel, leaving destruction in its wake and lives irrevocably altered. At least 27 people have been killed by the morning of May 18.
Paul and Gail Cline, a married couple in their 60s, were among the miraculous survivors. They both lost an arm while clinging to one another as the hurricane ripped through their house.
Their story captivated the nation due to the strength of their friendship as well as the horrific injuries they sustained. After their house fell around them, Paul and Gail were both taken to the hospital with serious injuries. There were no longer any arms encircling each other. However, they managed to keep their spirits intact.
Many people in America are now suppressing their tears due to an emotional update.
After thirty years of marriage, the pair has finally reunited in the hospital. And they managed to smile through the agony despite the trauma.

First words
Gail spent a number of stressful days on a ventilator before being safely taken off of it last Thursday. It was a significant turning point in her healing process and the first time she and Paul saw each other in person.
”She broke ten ribs and one of them punctured her lung. She had a liver laceration, a broken collar bone as well…scratches everywhere,” their niece, Taylor Baker, told Lex18. ”I feel like these nurses are our family at this point.”
”Her first words off of the vent were, ‘I love you,’” shared Brandy Bowman, another of their nieces.
”It was very emotional in the best way,” said Baker. “For them getting to reunite and for him finally getting to see her without that breathing tube. The photo that we have of them, she has the biggest smile on her face looking at him.”
Even though Paul and Gail’s reunion was lovely, there is still a long and uncertain road ahead.
”You take one step forward, you take three steps back,” their son, Jeff Cline, says. “It’s been just back and forth this whole time. They are — progress — but they’re still in the woods. It’s not like they’re ready to go home tomorrow. They still have a long road ahead.”
”These guys are really the heroes in the capes”
Jeff also conveyed his sincere appreciation to the neighbourhood and everyone who came to his parents’ aid that evening. He specifically mentioned the sheriff’s office, fire departments, local ministries, EMTs Tim Thompson and Mark Rudder, neighbours Justin Messer and Brandon Hill, and the personnel at St. Joseph’s London Hospital.
“We teach all of these kids to believe in Superman or Batman—all of that stuff,” he said. ”These guys are really the heroes in the capes.”
Paul will shortly be sent to a rehabilitation facility for additional care, including scans to check for internal injuries, even though Gail and Paul are still in the hospital.
Paul and Gail Cline have demonstrated to the world what true love and resiliency look like in spite of the unspeakable agony and suffering. After experiencing horror, their reunion—eye to eye, hand in hand—is a moment of optimism and a reminder that the human spirit can triumph even in the most dire circumstances. They will have a hard road to recovery, but they won’t be alone because the country is behind them.
