The 19-Year-Old Son Of A Former Brazil Star ‘Brain Dead’ After A Truck Crash On His Way To His First Training Session

After a car accident on his way to training, the son of a former Brazil star has been deemed “brain dead.”

The 19-year-old Pedro Severino was in the front passenger seat when his car struck a truck on a Brazilian highway.

Severino suffered a significant brain injury in the incident, which occurred at 5:21 a.m. on Monday, March 4.

Although his neurosurgical treatment at 10.50 am was successful, he is still in critical condition.

Later that night a doctor proclaimed him ‘brain dead’, but for it to be legally proven, another doctor has to concur.

Severino’s father, Lucas Severino, was a striker for Botafogo and Athletico Paranaense in Brazil.

At the 2000 Summer Olympics, Lucas competed for Brazil alongside players like Lucio and Ronaldinho, but he was never awarded a complete cap on the international scene.

Pedro Castro, an 18-year-old football player who was in the rear seat of the car, was also transported to the hospital as a result.

When the collision occurred, the youths were traveling to the training facility of their club in Atibaia, which is located north of Sao Paulo.

A few hours after arriving at the hospital in Americana, Brazil, Castro was released with minor injuries.

Despite being breathalyzed, neither of the drivers in the collision was found to have been under the influence of alcohol.

The football players were on their way back from visiting relatives in Ribeirao Preto.

Severino was on his way to his first practice with the Red Bull Bragantino U20 team, which plays in the Brazilian Serie A.

A statement from the Dr Waldemar Tebaldi Municipal Hospital said: “For brain death to be confirmed, the patient must undergo a clinical exam by two different doctors, with at least an hour between their assessments, as well as an apnoea test and other supplementary exams.”

“This process could take up to 24 hours after the protocol was started at 4:30pm. The hospital team is providing full support to the family during this difficult time.”

A Red Bull Bragantino spokesperson said: “Since being informed of the incident, the club has been closely monitoring the players’ condition and providing all the necessary support.”
