Barack and Michelle Obama’s Daughters Are All Grown Up—And The Resemblance Is Striking
The first lady and former president of the United States are now living as empty nesters. Over the years, their kids have developed a strong bond, which they have now extended by moving in together.
One of Michelle and Barack Obama’s two daughters, according to internet fans, looks “like her dad,” while the other is a “mini” version of her mother. Parents have praised Malia and Sasha Obama, who are now in their 20s.
The close bond between the siblings has helped them navigate life in the spotlight. Both were in college when the epidemic brought them home, Malia at age 22 and Sasha at age 19, almost four years after their father’s presidency ended.
“Malia and Sasha have been with us almost continuously since March, with just a few breaks,” Barack divulged in a joint November 2020 interview.
The Obamas enjoyed the unexpected time together with their girls back home. According to Barack, they were quite happy when their kids joined them for supper every night and enjoyed playing games and watching movies.
As they grew older, the sisters became even closer. “I think part of what’s been also wonderful is seeing Malia and Sasha become such great friends,” Barack expressed.
Their father claims that although they were three years apart, their early years were filled with the typical sibling conflicts, such as borrowing clothes and having lighthearted arguments.
As young adults, they decided to live together, and their relationship has only gotten stronger. Michelle acknowledged in a November 2022 interview that she controlled her joy when Malia and Sasha made the decision to live together because she didn’t want to sway their choice.
Instead, she casually responded, “Okay, well that’s interesting that you guys are going to try living together. We’ll see how it goes.” Deep down, she was grateful her daughters found comfort in each other, saying, “It’s like the one thing you want for them.”
After settling into their Los Angeles flat, the sisters used inexpensive items from Ikea and yard sales to decorate. Their mother is still careful about how much she divulges about their life, even though their new chapter as roommates has strengthened their bond.
When asked about the hardest truth she revealed in her book, “The Light We Carry,” Michelle explained that honesty has never been difficult for her. “It is what it is,” she said, though she admitted that discussing parenthood came with challenges.
The devoted parent was careful about how much she disclosed in order to preserve Malia and Sasha’s privacy, stating that since they weren’t looking for attention, it was crucial to keep information about their life and exposure to the public to a minimum.
Michelle made it clear that the purpose of their presence was to benefit others, and her daughters read portions concerning them before to publication. She did, however, reiterate the value of limits, claiming that they were not well-known on social media and that they did not pursue paparazzi attention because of her book.
Despite Malia and Sasha continuing to forge their own paths, the close-knit family dynamic of the Obamas endures.

Malia: A Creative Force in Film and Television
In July 1998, Michelle and Barack had their first daughter. In July 2024, her father sent her, who is now 26 years old, a birthday tribute.
On Instagram, Barack shared a throwback photo of them holding hands, writing, “Happy birthday, Malia. One of the greatest joys of my life is watching you grow into the extraordinary woman you’ve become today – and the fact that you’re still willing to hold your dad’s hand in public!”
Malia’s sensitive personality, which her parents loved in her as a child, has carried over into adulthood. Known as “wise and thoughtful,” she took drama lessons, collected keychains, and demonstrated independence early on by making her own bed and setting her own alarm before first grade.
“My 9-year-old is always coming up with remarkable things,” Barack said in a 2008 interview, sharing how his daughters’ kindness often moved him to tears.
He recalled a moment when Malia, then six, asked, “Daddy, are we rich?” After he explained they were well off but not extremely wealthy, she responded, “Well, that’s good because I don’t want to be really rich. I think I want to live a simple life.” Her words left him wondering, “Where did she come up with that?”
Malia’s independent spirit carried into young adulthood. At 18, she graduated from Sidwell Friends School in June 2016 and planned to attend Harvard after a gap year. As the Obamas prepared to leave the White House, Barack admitted, “They’re ready to get out, just out from their parents’ house… But Malia’s going off to college. She’s a grown woman.”
After graduating from college, Malia followed her passion for storytelling by entering the entertainment industry. She became a writer and director after earning her Harvard degree in 2021. She served as the director of the 2023 short play “The Heart.”
The Chicago native’s talents to a well-known streaming series also brought attention to her television work. She co-wrote “Girl, Bye,” the fifth episode of the Prime Video series “Swarm,” which was co-written by Janine Nabers and Donald Glover. This was her first TV writing gig.
The episode was dubbed “probably one of the wildest” by showrunner Nabers, who also hailed Malia as “an incredible writer” with daring and amusing ideas. She worked as a production assistant on “Extant” and as an intern on “Girls” before to joining “Swarm.”
She later worked alongside Stephen Glover, Ibra Ake, and other industry veterans as a staff writer for the series after being hired by Glover. Malia’s participation in the “Swarm” writers’ room gave the show’s narrative a new angle. Nabers appreciated her perspective because the characters in the book are in their 20s.
The showrunner stated in an interview that “she’s a very professional person,” highlighting the team’s desire to provide her with the opportunity to pursue television writing. The Chicago native was able to hone her abilities and get expertise in a dynamic creative setting thanks to the opportunity.
When Malia won the New Generation prize for “The Heart” at the Festival de Deauville in September 2024, her filmmaking brought her prominence on a global scale. Online users commented on her success and appearance as she walked the red carpet.
Some were struck by her resemblance to her parents, with one noting, “She’s her dad’s twin, but her mother is written all over her… she’s amazing.” Others focused on her likeness to Barack, with comments like “Looks just like her dad. Soo beautiful” and “OMG. She looks just like Barack.”
Another echoed, “She’s just like her dad omg.” Meanwhile, one pointed out how she embodies both of her parents, “She is such an exact combination of her parents.”
Sasha accepted her own path and gained the same amount of affection and respect from her family that Malia did as she proceeded to advance in the entertainment sector.
Sasha: Embracing Independence and Success
In June 2001, Barack and Michelle had their second daughter. In June 2022, Barack posted a tribute and a vintage picture of him holding her as a baby to commemorate her 21st birthday.
“Happy birthday, Sasha! I have loved watching you grow into the intelligent, beautiful, and caring young woman you’ve become. And no matter how old you get — you’ll always be my baby girl. Look at those cheeks!” he wrote.
The Obama family has always laughed because of Sasha’s exuberant nature. According to Barack’s interview, she is “full of energy and the comedian in the family.”
He found it particularly memorable when she jokingly objected to an early wake-up. Michelle urged them to prepare for school by turning on the lights, and Sasha, who was still half sleeping, exclaimed, “Awww, Mommy, we are peace!” She probably meant serene, the father of two said, adding that he and his wife later used the term anytime they desired some quiet time.
Sasha’s early years were also a whirlwind of academics, athletics, and the arts. She took gymnastics and tap dance classes, played basketball, and studied tennis and piano with Malia.
Sasha started college at the University of Michigan in 2019 after graduating from Sidwell Friends School, initially taking classes virtually because of the COVID-19 epidemic. Later, while continuing to provide virtual options, the school reopened for in-person instruction.
She achieved yet another significant accomplishment by May 2023, graduating from the University of Southern California with a degree in sociology. Malia, Michelle, and Barack were present to commemorate her accomplishment.
The following year, online users noticed her strong resemblance to her mother in a birthday tribute photo. Many pointed out the striking similarity, with one commenting, “So gorgeous like her mummy [sic].” Another stated, “I’m stuck on watching her grow up in front of my eyes!!!!! beautiful inside and out!!! [sic]” and someone else added, “Wow!! Sasha is a beautiful girl as her mom!”
More admiration followed, with one person writing, “She’s absolutely stunning like her mother.” Another marveled, “Oh my gosh!! She is a beautiful woman now!! “ Someone else stated, “She’s a mini you.”
Over the years, Michelle Obama has cherished the experience of watching her daughters mature. During an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” she shared that spending time with them is “fun” and called them “amazing young women.”
Ellen DeGeneres recalled their first visit when they were eight and ten, excited to see the Jonas Brothers. “They loved the Jonas Brothers. Now they are bringing grown men home,” Michelle joked, adding, “Before it was just, like, pop bands. Now they have boyfriends and real lives.”
In addition to ensuring sure Malia and Sasha learnt responsibilities, from making their beds to driving, she attributed her mother’s guidance on raising “real people” to her. She thinks such teachings helped to shape who they are now.
